A sticky thread or something, for new members, explaining how annyoing people digging up old topics is. If a thread hasn't been used in months its because its better off that way. If the topic seemed interesting to you, read it, if you have a similar topic, start a new thread. New threads are always a good idea.

Why is a new thread such a good idea?

Personally, I am quite happy for old threads to be brought up from the depths. Look at the "Members Pictures" thread in General Board, for example.

Yeah, but things that become lengthy arguments and discussions occasionalyl end after enough has been said. People just stating the same thing over and over again is annoying. So having that be brought up again months later is annoying. But yes, some threads can be fun.

New threads are a good idea because it gets more discussion going. For example: the pedo bait thread was done to death. I don't think many of us could handle much more of it. But if a new member had an interesting, undiscussed, aspect of pedo-baiting, why not start a new thread and tell us about it? When things start getting repetitive in that new thread, I'm sure we'll all be fine to let it go.

Of course, I'm sure you realise your argument here contradicts itself...

If someone has a new idea, something worth contributing, then starting a new thread is just asking for repetition of everything from the old thread.

Using the Paedo baiting thread as an example is pointless, as it has been locked.

Using the Paedo baiting thread as an example is pointless, as it has been locked.

It wasnt a pointless example, just an example that supported your argument, rather than his. Plus- why is it locked instead of being put in the FL, or merged with the other pedo-baiting threads (with my and odin's, but especially my, nonsense cut out and thrown into the FL)?

DD is right, bumping old threads is better than starting new ones, we dont need 10 threads about [INSERT TOPIC] when one will suffice. It doesnt matter if some of the posts are realloy old, so long as the information being posted is new, yet still relevant to the topic, no new thread on the same thing is necessary.

Think about it this way
You're a new person who's never been to this forum befopre and you are looking for information on... lets say drug legalization. You go clicking around and see a thread titled "legalization." Sure, there's some good info in there, but not all that much. Now, you keep on searching through the forums and then find 5 more threads entitled "drug legalization" "legalization of drugs" "Do you think drugs should be legal?" etc. It would be a hassle to look through all these thread for the info you need, when they should all just simply be 1 thread. It doesn't matter if some of the information/arguments are a year old- to whoever is looking at it for the first time it is stimulating and informative (hopefully).

I can understand Eso's point of view, but the arguments against it seem to have more of a firm ground. I think people should read threads and see how the develop. If it turned into a flame war or something, then I'd hope the person would leave it alone. Certain topics being brought from the dead seem to work, but the highly controversial obviously do not.

If a thread is locked or 6 pages of arguments, then start a new thread on the topic but ONLY if it is going to contain new information. Normally, clone threads are frowned upon.
