Registering to view posts can yield benefits.

1. Boost membership
2. Increase community involvement.

Then,
3. The number of notable and extraordinary or popular threads will rise.
4. Word of mouth spreads.
5. Repeat.

Or they register read the post than fucks off and we are left with a shitload of inactive members just taking up valuable active member space an well i think nearly everyone that gets some decent info will join and hopefully contributes "useful" info.
Oh making people join is a bit against what this board is about. Freedom of Information anyone?
*if they are looking for info and stumble across this page a few times might make them think OK this is a good place for "underground" shit i will join and spread my intellectual experiences!*

Valid points, but there are already inactive members and registering is free.

Requiring you to register to view posts stops allot of search engine bots this stops the search engine having you which stops more member coming.

We had about 50,000 thread views for the netflix thread within a week. Requiring people to register to read would have stopped that thread from being listed in the various blogs and news sites.

And there are other downsides like Nox and S25 pointed out. Rorta is all about freedom of information.

As for having certain boards members only, we had a two boards for 'discussing' filesharing and porn but the plan was never fully realised.

Personally, I don't see how it would help anything. If we got through the Netflix thing with no one trying to get us in any troube, I doubt the "legal" aspect of it is really an issue. We already have plenty of inactive members, so why get more? It's not the having 500 people who haven't posted that's a problem, it's the 500 that make a few lame posts, and leave. Why not keep this a fairly tight knit community, with the people joining tending to be people who have something constructive to add, and the other few just weeded out? Seems to make more sense. Wasn't the arcade members only? Damn I loved that. All my classmates at school were so jealous I found a game website that worked, and none of them could get on (I would have told them to sign up, had anyone I thought would have fit in or enjoyed it asked).
