Dopethrone and Dope Smoker arn't actually bands, they're just albums. Electric Wizard put out Dopethrone and DopeSmoker is by Sleep. And those two bands are considered Stoner/Doom Metal. But yeah, you pretty much have all the good Drone Metal bands. The song Geometry of Murder by earth is my favorite song of that genre.

Low quality version of Geomerty of Murder at - h**p://stonerrock.com/mp3/index.asp?Band=Earth&SortBy=BandName

Some more bands - h++p://youtube.com/watch?v=6CFkj6DDn9g

He was making fun of your taste in music. I though that was fairly obvious...

Drone metals a hell of a lot better than rap.

Stating which genre of music is better as fact. Good work.

Right is a waaaaay better direction than left.

Alright, clearly your understanding of the philosophy of aesthetics is better than mine (or anyone elses), so how is drone metal better than hip-hop? By what criteria?

With hip hop the 'artists' dont need talent or creativity to be sucessful. All they need is an image, someone to write their lyrics, a large bourgeois fanbase, and an mtv/court appearance. Yeah some of em write or mix their own sound but thats a minority. And STONE pretty much summarized the song content. With Drone metal the music is almost always ambient, long riffs, or melodies, not prerecorded sounds or snaps/claps/pops. And Doom metal is probably the most diverse genre of all. Im mobile right now so

I cant post a list of good examples of Doom. And Im posting seperate replies b/c this device limits the # of characters I enter per post. Doom metal covers a lot of issues too, from politics, epic fantasy, to drugs, history and (un)popular culture.

Brilliant points Sabotage, rap is also so hypocritical.
I can remember who it was but one of these high profile rappers, I think Dr Dre mentioned racism. And criticised it.
Look at your song lyrics.

Talent and creativity? Covering real issues? Listen to 2pac. I don't even like his music but I'm not a great fan of jazz and I accept it's brilliance. They teach that man in schools.

With Drone metal the music is almost always ambient, long riffs, or melodies, not prerecorded sounds or snaps/claps/pops.

Massive Attack.

..a large bourgeois fanbase..

Definition (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bourgeois) of bourgois. An odd arguement to make in defence of drone metal over hip-hop.

And Doom metal is probably the most diverse genre of all.

While I'm unaware of how diversity (or any of qualities you've stated) make a genre "superior", a quick glance at the Breakbeat section of "Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music" will show hip-hop spawning (quick count...) 31 other genres.

So, back to the matter at hand. From a neutral point of view (disregarding drone metal and hip-hop), what makes any gere of music superior to another? What is the quantifiable measure of a genre's quality?

I should have stated it better, what I meant by bourgeois was middle class caucasian adolescents. As for your counter examples those, while notable, are ultimately irrevalent b/c I was speaking of *current* hip hop as a whole. But you are right, preferences are subjective, while one can make arguments about degrees of originality, talent, and quality about music/musicians. Likeability cannot be argued or compared. People listen to music for different reasons. Whether its just for a calming or relaxing

effects, to relate about relationships/human interaction, escapism, or using music to sell revolution(although more commonly its seems people use revolution to sell their music(commercially sucessful punks))

Try looking there, they can have some pretty good bands in the Metal section sometimes. Also it's free and legit.
