My computer broke down. We haven't really gotten around to fixing it, since it's such in bad shape and we're all lazy bastards around here. Fortunately, I had some of my old games on an external HD that I used. Heretic and Hexen, among them. You know, old DOS games. I could play these games on my old pc because I deliberately used Windows 98 on it.

So I take the external HD and connect it to my father's PC, which is has XP. And like with many old games, they seem to always fuck up on XP.

Heretic and Hexen work fine. Only that they keep on switching back and forth to the desktop screen. I get in the game. One.. Two.. Three.. Poof! It's desktop time again. I consider myself lucky because most of my other old games don't even run. I'm left clueless why this happens.

Can anyone help?

Oh and furthermore.. Post any comments, suggestions, and questions in this thread regarding things you have to bitch about regarding program problems with XP.

Try getting new copies?
Where did you get them from?

Alot of DOS games now up on the internet, DOOM, Wolfenstein etc have problems on them. Get new copies and if the problem persists tell me the version of windows you are running.

Edit: Put them on the main harddrive. This might help.

I had a problem with XP a few years. The graphic interface stopped working. Nothing I did would fix it, so I installed Linux after backing everything up. I did another install of XP recently for my dad on the same computer and it worked fine. Get a copy of GParted and start over, maybe.

They're pretty old versions. I'm currently downloading some new ones that claim to support XP. This had better work. If these don't work..

I always have my sledgehammer.
Bwahahaha

The best way to run DOS games in XP is to use an emulator. Download Virtual PC or VMware Server and install a DOS based OS such as 98SE.

Well, it turns out that the newer versions work. They're utilized through their own emulator program, so to speak. The graphics are improved and the games have new functions as well. I recommend Heretic as well as Hexen to anyone interested in authentic old DOS FPS games.

I have other old DOS games as well that don't work so I might as well follow through with Stone's suggestion as well.

Hey Th0r, throw me those links when you get the time. My dad's pc is so shitty old games will probably be the only ones that work, I reckon.
By the way, love your avatar. LOL
