i dont really care for swiss army knives, id say buck knifes are where its at, but id like to get my hand on a pair of butterfly knives eventually. u can do some pretty cool tricks with those, but as far as in a fight, i doubt u could really do anything with a butterfly knife against a 10 inch buck knife :P

Buck knives are cool.
Problem is you can only get them at limited suppliers. This will become more of an issue with other knives pen knifes and other similar knives...
Where I am at Buck knives are pricey, to say the least...
And ordering them cheaper off the net is a pain as well...

What knives do you like?
fixed blades. combat styles and "mini katana" styles
What knives in your opinion suit a certain situation best?
theres nothing really that a fixed blade cant do. they are strong and deadly in the right hands. the only negative point about them is the fact that they need a holster/sheath and those are usually uncomfortable.
What tactics do you use with a knife?
Every knife fight ive ever gotten into went the same. I see a threat and put my hand on my knife untill the last second. when i have a chance to attack i do major damage and use some other form of assaut (kick/punch)
the only other way i use a knife is for intimidation. that i usually the same. i take out the knife and kick/punch or the opposite.

SPETNATZ KNIVES THAT EJECT THE BLADE AND SHOOTS IN OUT THE HANDLE AS A FLYING PROJECTILE. THANKS TO OUR DICK GOVERMENT THEY OUT LAWED THEM AS A CLASS 3 WEAPON
PROHIBITED TO OWN PERIOD LIKE MACHINE GUNS! And thanks to smoking too much pot one day I fucking lost mine.
other than that I like case, colombia river knife & tool crkt, italian automatics, swede steel, gerber covert combat col rex applegate, and those cool hair brushes by cold steel with the hidden huge spike that can be weilded in a flash. Also the out the front godfather switch blade spike pens. oh theres so many loves

The Spetsnaz knives are very good. But they are now hard to find, not too mention becoming more expensive.

for a while, they could sell you the complete knife without the spring. i havent seen an ad for one in years. the company that was making them in the u.s. might be out of business......
from the pictures i have seen, they look kind of clunky and apt to snag on clothing. i don't think i'd trust the latch too far either. personally, in a combat situation i'd take one of those tanto thingies or maybe a k-bar. for self defense on the street, i think i'd take a can of soup in a knee-high sock. we have to worry about how all of this will look in court, after all.
i have a swiss army knife in my pocket that is hella useful. its the one with the phillips screwdriver instead of a corkscrew. light and handy, doesnt rust, cuts everything i need to cut just fine.....

I too have a Swiss Army Knife and have had it since 04.
I prefer the Corkscrew but I guess a Phillips would be more useful too me.
It has a long blade, short blade, Corkscrew, a bottle opener plus three more applications. The model is the Victorinox: Officers Suisse. Cost ?15 in 2004.
I recommend it.

Thor ,
I am in the USA. , I was born in france. My Father was from your neck of the woods. He was born in Kingston Upon Hull. I have been dying to visit my relatives in the UK. There are some cool swiss army type knives about with a built in .31 calibre black powder barrel. Although it invokes fear of shooting ones own tallywhacker off on accident..

I see.
Kingston Upon Hull is an interesting place certainly, although I prefer Kingston Upon Thames.
I think it would be pretty interesting to see/have one with effectively what is a gun in a knife. Certainly brings self defence to a whole new level.

I forgot Kabar they make a hell of a good knife! IMHO indistructable also its 1095 takes a keen edge easy, SOG is a good knife. Case is a american classic, Boker german made, eye brand, eskiltuna knives by ja helberg. I love knives and none are my favorites I have over 100 favorite knives in my collection. For a carry backup to my .380 ppk I like the col rex applegate fairbane folder made by gerber. It is a serious fast opening defensive weapon steel is extremely good quallity

Walther?
Never carry weapons in self defence unless you are completely prepared to use them. Otherwise it is a fairly pointless exercise. Several offensive weapon charges on your back, for weapons you would not have used anyway...

YEP WALTHER ., I love those little conceable ppk's. I guess the question is when the chips are down Will you throw down? I like air tasers a nice non lethal piss n shit your pants end of problem. And buys a get away in a jammed up scenario. Bought one of those cobray mac 10's kinda a goofy piece of shit. Hard to hold & hard to hit anything. semiauto lookalike 32 rounds 9mm. I am in southern usa very few gun laws

The Walther is a good reliable and loyal gun. Ask James Bond. Invented for Gestapo use in Nazi Germany. The nickel ones are very nice.
I don't like the thought of a semi automatic sub machine gun...
Its all a bit too "ghetto" and "gangsta" for me. That's a bad image. I am much more of a rifle person. You can have a better relationship with them...
Plus they are more accurate. But when your involved in a battle with fellow criminals or whatever its not the best way to go down...
Everyone else: Draws out Mac 10s and Tec 9s
You: Bring out your Parker Hale sniper rifle and begin popping heads
Everyone else: Pummels you with bullets and you die. You kill two of the five other criminals...

i recently bought a tanto knife 8 inches i am very satisfied with it as mentioned earlier by Crazy white guy it does become uncomfortable to carry them around so when it comes to mobility and just for self defence purposes i just use a switch knives as they are very easy to conceal and intimidating enough

I used to carry around a 5-inch Bowie knife back when I regularly biked through somewhat shitty parts of town.
Now I just carry a multitool and a good bike-mountable flashlight. Both can be used as blunt-trauma weapons, and both have (derp) multiple uses beyond that of weapons, especially when I go off-road biking on random-ass trails in the woods.

For a decent sized fixed blade hunting knife I have an Ontario SP1 with 1095 high carbon steel.
For everyday just going anywhere I carry an old Gerber multitool that my father got from his former job
And for personal defense if I dont have the multitool then it's a Spyderco Tenacious

Just a simple Gerber 6" blade carbon steel handle and blade. Unless I'm trailblazing through a rainforest, there aren't too many things this thing can't do.
I am also partial to butterfly knives, but its hard to get good quality ones these days because they are illegal most places and are treated as more of a novelty item, or marketed to gay Dragonball Z button-down wearing, ninja wannabees.
All my good ones have been confiscated by police and haven't found any ones worth buying since.
For self defense, no knife. Just a screw driver that has the end shaved down to a sharp point. Much more deadly than a simple blade.

I like KA-BAR USMC knives, they're a good tough as nails knife I will agree though, a sheath is a nuisance during some situations. I also like Italian stiletto knives, and WWI trench knives. I would love to come across a pearl handle switchblade but seeing as they're illegal in my area I doubt I will. IMO I prefer a multi-tool rather than a Swiss Army knife for the sole purpose as an avid angler I like the luxury of having a pair of pliers handy. I myself carry an S&W folder (didn't know they made knives) with a quick release button, similar to Gerber's F.A.S.T. feature. I don't necessarily use a knife for anything other than a simple tool say for cutting the ties on hay squares in the winter for my dogs.

Doesn't Gerber endorse and carry Bear Grylls image on all of their knives now? All the more reason not to support that company.
I usually always buy Kershaw knives (why this brand hasn't been mentioned is beyond me).
Quasi-knife related but I just purchased Leatherman's Charge TTi and goddamn is it a beast. Durable would be an understatement.

No Gerber only has the "Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival" line of products. Everything else is the same as it always was. My personal favorite is the LMF 2 Infantry a guy in my class has one and he freaking loves it, Ive been looking at it and also the SOG Seal Pup for a replacement knife

Ah. I saw a display at Wal Mart the other day and went, "Oh hell no".
Sidenote, has anyone noticed that Wal Mart now keeps their knives on racks rather than behind glass displays now? Or is that just my area?

I would have to say your area, down here in the south they are kept in the glass door closet like things. Believe me no cop would carry an LMF 2 if bear grylls was on it

I live in Atlanta - sounds like you're local stores don't have the new design. There is no more "center counter" for ammo, knives, etc. in the new store layouts. It's all in aisles.
I got a $100 dollar gift card to REI in the mail, in other news, by opening a credit card with them I don't intend to use. I'm thinking of buying this (http://www.rei.com/product/737697/benchmade-530-serrated-locking-knife) with it.

I've been kind of unhappy with my Benchmades. They are sort of a premium knife and IMO are not worth the price. I much prefer Spyderco, and CRKT for 1/4 the price. The liner locks on Benchmade have always been sort of shitty.
I got one of the CRKT "Lumabiner" carabiner keychain knives recently and I've been quite happy with that.

I'd have to look, I have a number of them. I liked them back in the early 2000s but they seem to have gotten rather loose since then also, this could be an issue with the setscrews which may need locktite or something on them.
It's just a personal preference thing but I was surprised that as a semi-highend knife company their workmanship was substantially worse than Spyderco or CRKT. I wouldn't recommend them and I am the farthest thing from a perfectionist about that sort of thing.

I'm a fan of their newer stuff, and I say this as a guy that only bought Kershaw for the longest time. The Griptillian, thus far, has proven itself as an everyday utility knife.
I'm looking for a fixed knife, full tang, 4"+, also. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm really digging Gerber's Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife. Apparently it's full tang now. Plus, it has the ferro rod, sharpening stone in the sheath, pummel, etc. The ONLY draw back is that it's half serration; I have no use for that. I wish they offered it in a full blade - I'd buy it in a heart beat if that were the case.
