I am surprised no one has posted about this, and i really hope its no where else. Which GTA do you guys think was the best and why?
I would say Vice City owned all of them for a few reasons:
1) The story, SA had a terrible story. No background and i didn't feel in the game as i did in VC
2) Good size, VC may have been smaller but SA was way to big unless you were in a jet. In VC i knew where everything was and never ever got lost, which happend way to many times in the country side of SA
3) Radio, the sound track in VC has to be the best that i have ever heard, i don't like much of the rap on SA and not much of the rock either
4) Candy Sux, come on who doesn't like her? :P
SA has some things that were better like weapons more cars and planes, but over all i had a better time with VC

I am not going to put GTA 3 on the poll but feel free to tell me why it was the best if you think it was.

I agree VC was awesome, still is, and always will be. I also thought SA was too big, too confusing and the story and music licked ass. The best thing in that game is the NRG-500 and the military jet...Since I got SA I beat VC 100%, it was fun as hell! Still fun as hell even after I had played it for so long before. SA would be impossible to beat 100% without some major cheating.

I like San Andreas better.

I think the reason this topic hadn't been posted is because it goes without saying that San Andreas > Vice City > GTA:3

First thing, the stats in San Andreas such as stamina and muscle are worked really well into the game, as well as weapon skills. The more experienced you are with a certain weapon, the better your aim and ability until you can finally move while aiming, carry two of them, get headshots pretty much every time... whatever, depending on the weapon.

The storyline and soundtrack are top notch, a lot better than Vice City IMHO.

If you prefer a smaller map, which is easier to navigate, that is fair enough. Personally, I find that really strange. I have had San Andreas since it came out so I never get lost.

Swimming, eating, flying (planes, jetpack)... there are so many reasons that San Andreas is superiour to Vice City that I couldn't even start to name them all, Im not sure we have the bandwidth :P

I also have had it since it came out, i am a big fan, and you can't get 'lost' because there is a map, duh, but in VC i knew where the nearest gun store was w/o having to pause and look to see. That gets to be a real pain. I do agree that all the new shit makes it fun, but again i have to say that VC was better. Please tell me why you think that the story in SA is better than the one is VC because i don't really see that. Also i guess the music is perosnal preff but i think that VC had the best sound track out of any game i have ever played.

The story in SA is weak because it just doesnt really flow well. There is no background except, your mom is dead, you used to be in this gang, you came for the funeral from liberty city. That's it, where as in VC, you got out of jail, your mafia friends send you to VC to get them into the drug trade, your deal is fucked, and then the game really starts.

I dont see your opinion of how the two background storys differ in quality so... they're both valid, and thats all ya need.

Some of the pre-mission scenes in SA are absolutely hilarious, and most of the radio stations are.

OK, I turned on Vice City for a little while last night.

The controls are 10 times better in SA. For example the targeting system, using both analogs simultaneously to control and shoulder buttons to lock/shoot. I really couldn't do without this now.
Being able to lock onto people when not holding a live weapon.
The range of vehicles.
NOT DYING WHEN YA FALL INTO THE WATER

There are so many reasons that SA is better than VC.

When GTA3 came out, it was amazing... no-one had seen such a game before, something where the boundarys had been pushed further than we had experienced. They started work on Vice City very soon after, and developers admitted that VC was a kinda rush-job because of the money made by GTA3. Now on SA they literally squeezed as much as they possibly could into the disk, while eliminating load lines (which if VC had a map the size of SA, would be plentiful to say the least.) There was a lot of improvement in pretty much every area, and the whole game has a much darker feel that VC which was far too bright and cheery for a game about crime and corruption. I seriously doubt that SA will leave room for a sequel, there's not a whole lot more they could do (remembering they would need a LOT to warrant making a new game out of it, Im not asking for suggestions on a new one.)

Liking VC more than SA is probably a "better the devil you know" type scenario, where ya don't want to get used to a new game since you don't really make use of the features any of them have to offer... maybe shoot, drive, shoot.

The things they changed don't really make a big difference to me..I can shoot fine in VC, and dying in water isnt a big deal to me either.

I vote neither. I love the classics. I've laughed my guts up playing them over the years.

Ah memories :)

I personally, like GTASA MUCH better than Vice City because SA is much more interactive, and i love how you can specialize your vehicle, i just wish that you could put anything on any vehicle. i like SA better because it's got more flying and fun, more bikes, just better. Jesus has spoken

SA was really great in almost every category. I love the old school rap.

The story WAS weak though. It didn't make sense. Why would a common street gang put so much effort into holding territory so they could NOT sell drugs on it. The rise of street gangs in the 70s-90s was a direct result of the emergence of a viable market for drugs in poor areas. Especially crack. Read up on gang history sometime. The whole point of any criminal organization in history claiming a section of a city as their own was so they could engage in illicit activity on it for profit, without worrying about rival gangs. VC had a good story that made sense and for all you know might be the true story of your next door neighbor. Hell, it reads alot like my cousins life. Tommy even looks just like him.

DoctaD

Their ex-gang members were all junkies, and rival gangs were selling the drugs on their turf... they wanted to clean up the streets, get rid of the dealers, to get their gang back together.

Armalite

But they put it off like they are sXe gangbangers. Can you imagine? You get the distinct impression that they never sold drugs or approved of drug use. I can see how they would be mad about members using, as most dealers who are successful for long period of time are wise enough to either not use at all or to use sparingly some other drug they do not sell. And until you begin buying property, you really have no reason to hold these territories. It's a gay storyline.

I liked SA better because of the better guns and the street car mod shop.

I liked the missions better and the whole street gang theme it has to it... Unlike LC which is mafia type gangs. The story could have been better though and I admit, the LC storyline was better in my opinion.

More reasons I prefer SA are:
- The mod shops
- The guns
- The cars - although I do miss the diablo stallion.
- Tattooists/Barbers
- The casinos
- The gang wars

Many more, can't be arsed to list them.

We stuck on San Andreas yesterday for the first time in months. Done 5 or 6 missions and just have the very last one left to do... We have 75% of the game completed. So we decided to start finishing off required Odd Jobs.

We have ambulance and taxi missions finished, and all tags.

How the fuck are you supposed to get all the photo-ops without the walkthrough book? I can't get them all with it!

I could never find any of them anyway. My friend beat the game 100% without cheating at all, I'll ask him..

You're missing the point entirely. GTA3 dominates every game that was ever made. VC and SA were just mods and add-ons for all intents and purposes. What GTA3 did probably won't be matched until we get virtual reality. I don't think even multi-player GTA will match up to the gaming renaissance that was GTA3. I played GTA3 for weeks solid when it came out. Every little thing was pure brilliance. What was VC? A new map and some gimmicks. SA was the same thing, just spread out more.

GTA3 is the greatest game ever made.

Vice City and San Andreas were both great games and asking which was better is a hard question, but I think it was San Andreas. It just had way more features, although I felt the weapons and graphics didnt live up to Vice City. The problem with Vice City, was how you couldnt customise Vercetti and some of the characters were just poor, in comparison to San Andreas. and Vice City stories was a disapointment in some ways... does anyone know if there is a GTA: San Andreas Stories planned?

I thought Tommy Vercetti was a better character, he made me feel like it was actually me running around doing all that crazy shit.

I never understood the Vice City love. It was alright but not something I'm ever likely to pick up again. After you get the mansion and do the few missions it has there was nothing to do until I figured out you had to buy properties and do their missions. I bought a couple places and did their missions, still no story advancement so I just quit. Someone told me Lance is supposed to betray you at some point and that's the end but I never felt compelled to go on.

Never beat Gta 3 either. Got about 75% through it I think. I got to a mission where I had to destroy these things, except there were no map markers. It gave me about 3 minutes to do it, after failing a few times I put the game away and just never went back to it.

My favorite is probably Gta 4. I just like the realism and the story was the best in my opinion. I just wish they hadn't removed all the customization you had in SA. It felt like a step backward in that regard. I was disappointed in the lack of choices too. They made it sound like you would get to choose your dialogue responses and all that jazz, instead the choices you get, except for the endgame choice, are entirely trivial.

These games were lacking a certain something for me. It could be the console factor-- I've never been much of a console guy.

On the other hand I had massive respect for the way they did most things. I love games where you just go around mindlessly killing people, mowing them down. GTA3 was the greatest for that. Never played VC to any extent. And the ability to drive around the city was amazing.

GTA4 I didn't care for so much. It seemed much more like the violence was a set of programmed setpieces. On the other hand I never got very far into the game. It was vastly overhyped, and when games are pumped that much it kind of shows that the producers lack some confidence in the product-- they are pumping money into marketing instead of into the final stages of development.

Even though I don't care for those games so much-- just not my cup of tea-- I can recognize them as some of the best ever released. Compare them to the terrible (IMO) Mass Effect and Dragon Age games, which are essentially glorified rail shooters-- you're a puppet in someone else's story. In GTA you're making your own stories, and they're ultraviolent ones.
