I love this show so much, that I feel I have to share something with all my fellow Rortians... so here ya go!
http://www.rorta.net/SD/ihave.jpg
DoctaD is offering this image of his collection of Family Guy episodes which are legally his as he watched the shows on TV and downloaded the files from his brain in some strange but quite impressive futuristic dance which seemed almost like a Jamaican mating ritual (It involves a lot of smoke and hair.)
Just to make sure everyone realises, Im not offering you these yet... Unless I really like you, then I will happily copy them onto DVDs for you whenever I get around to buying myself a DVD writer... Is anyone actually reading this, or am I typing to myself in a pointless stoned ramble... yeah, pointless ramble it is...

Instead of burning them to DVD perhaps you could let us know where you, hypothetically, may have downloaded them from. I'm assuming bittorrent?
I only ask because I hear good things about Family Guy however Australian TV robs me of this apparently very funny program. Strangely though we do get American Idol, which is anything but entertaining...
Oh and yes I obvioulsy read the fine print so it wasn't a pointless ramble afterall.

American Dad sucks. It's a complete rip off of Family Guy, and I am aware its the same guy. SAme basis and all, there is no difference. It's got jokes, the same ones that'd be on Family Guy so they should just keep them in there.
Seth (McFarlene) and Seth (Green) have another show out called Robot Chicken. This is a must see and if you get a chance watch that cause.. awe... no words.

American Dad... this seems to be a step too far. Seth is a genious, but I can't see how he's gonna be original with this new show.
Then again, I shouldnt diss it until Ive tried it.

Ok, so... American Dad.
I've watched the first five episodes and only laughed out loud maybe twice. So FG pwns AD on da LOL scale :?
It's not as much of a rip off of Family Guy as I was expecting it to be, but there are exact replicas of jokes used. One I noticed was the alien guy saying "Who do I have to probe around here for a chardonnay(sp?)?" and Brian has said "Who's leg do I have to hump for a dry martini?" I think Brian's version is funnier.
Has anyone heard anything about the supposed Simpsons movie? Is it happening?

There's been rumours about a Simpsons movie for years. The Simpsons is past it though, Family Guy is the new king...

I'm sorry but I still find Simpsons to be greater then Family Guy.
This is because: A) It has a reputation. B) It's been on air, for what, 17 years? First appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. Family Guy was also banned from Fox. Simpsons contains just as much bad language and content as Family Guy and still stayed on the air. C) Family Guy has used many of the Simpsons jokes. D) Simpsons is the original. and most importantly E) Simpsons contains more adult and 'smart' humor, while family guy has more of a stupid humor, i.e. Fart Jokes. I've been through classes of History taught almost entirely on Simpsons episodes. When you watch the Simpsons with more bits of knowledge you get quite alot more jokes and hidden things in some episodes. Family Guy though, does have the ability to keep laughs on an on-going joke.
Now don't get me wrong, I love both shows, and piss my pants on both, but in my opinion, Simpsons>Family Guy and I'll try and keep this away from a show war. I'll go over to TOTSE and do that.
As for the movie I do think it's in deveopement. Simpsons is entirely hand drawn and can take 8 months to do one episode. Figure turning 20 mins of cartoon into 120 mins of cartoon. Might take what? 48 months?
Plus they are still coming out with new episodes so they are working on that. The movie is going to take some time.

I find with Family Guy it is a lot easier to watch an episode you've seen before. I only have series 15 and 16 of The Simpsons on my HD, but Im pretty sure Ive seen every episode ever made... unless they're making series 17, of course.

Dude. Family Guy has WAY more pop culture references and inside jokes than the Simpsons. They're just a lil more obscure too people that didn't grow up in the 80s. Here's an example, a poor one but it's easy to get and it just popped into mind: When Peter created his own country in his backyard and got diplomatic immunity, and sang his own version of "Can't Touch This." "I got dimplomatic immunity, just like the badguys, from Lethal Weapon 4, CAN"T TOUCH THIS!"
Boww dumm dumm duhh, dumm dumm, dumm duhh. Can't touch this!

No, that's just a parody of MC Hammer's song. It's an 80's pop culture reference, but it's mostly a parody.
Family Guy is also more ADD humor. They'll skip plot idea and structure and throw in jokes and actions out of nowhere, which makes it so funny. The whole idea of Springfeild is such a concept. Sure there was Petoria, but Mat Groening has kept the state of Springfield hidden, despite what people have said, there is not enough evidence to point the town anywhere. The town was founded by Buffalo Springfield (who is also a rock musician from the 70's? 80's? 90's?). The whole story is a spoof of some real events. There is even an episode taht they discover he's a pirate and was responsible for the missing section of the famous Washington portrait with the bottom half missing (which too I believe is real.).
If that's not enough, how about all the guest stars that have been on The Simpsons? The Who, RHCP, Aerosmith, Smashing Pumpkins (when Homer went on tour with Lollapolooza), and Ron Howard, and many common voices are/were some big names such as Jon Lovits and Phil Hartman (God Rest his Soul). Now how are you going to tell me there's more Pop Culture reference in Family Guy than Simpsons?
Just because it's an older episode and it doesn't reflect this week news doesn't mean it's not a pop culture reference.
As for inside jokes, can't really say... how do you know what's an inside joke and what's not?
Again, Family Guy is ADD humor, meaning that there is usually something new or somewhat hidden since there a few jokes at once. Simpsons has been on for almost two decades and with only 300 episodes it's only enough to play one episode each day for not even a year before they start to run reruns. Not to mention that channals will play the same episode later in the day, week, month etc. I know here the Simpsons will be on as much as 3 times a day on Fox. So we've seen it all. Family Guy is just a breath of fresh air rather than a Savior.
Simpsons is coming out with new episodes, just not as much as before for whatever reason, probably do to the long creative process.

Well...you make a good argument. But the Simpsons is VERY stale. But otherwise a perfect post.
Except for this.
No, that's just a parody of MC Hammer's song. It's an 80's pop culture reference, but it's mostly a parody.
Wtf? A parody can be a pop culture reference in itself. In fact, it is impossible to parody something without referring it. Plus it also referrenced Lethal Weapon 4.
{edit}
And what about the morality trips the Simpsons lays on us? Family Guy episodes occasionally have a moral lesson to them, but not often. Almost every Simpsons episode has some sort of moral lesson expressed by the end. Usually it's done blatantly as well. It's like wrapping Veggie Tales in a sarcastic candy coat.

The Simpsons try to hold onto a slight grasp of realism, while in Family Guy anything can happen. This gives Family Guy a much better window for blatant, in-your-face humour, which is the kind which will have you laughing out loud rather than quietly chuckling.

Hey guys, don't get me wrong, I love Family Guy as well, I've bought both volumes, I just think Simpsons is - all around - better than Family Guy.
As for Pop Culture vs. Parody; a pop culture reference would just refer to the popular times of a certain era, something The O.C. does alot of. A parody however is a spoof on pop culture, where as they take something famous and turn it into their own thing. Yes, Peter did mention MC Hammer and Lethal Weapon, but the song itself was a parody. Ever heard of Weird Al Yankovich? His whole music career is parodys of other songs. If you notice at the end, I said it's a pop culture reference but it's more of a parody than a reference.
What's wrong with having a moral ending? That's the way that most shows are written. Beginning, middle, and an end; Order -> Chaos -> Back to Order. Maybe sometimes it is done blatantly on purpose, just for the corniness. There also have been episodes that mock the idea of having a moral ending, and how the Simpsons do it. And there have been a few of these episodes as well, where they sit on the couch and realize that there is no moral and they get all confused and Marge can't understand that it's possible for there not to be a moral.
Also in Simpsons episodes, the beginning with the couch is usually different, what Bart writes on the Chalk board in detention is usually different, and when the episode starts it's usually one story that quickly turns into the shows actual plot, almost like there are two episodes in one. Next time you watch the show see if the beginning matches or has any relativity to the middle and ending.
And yes... Simpsons is starting to get stale.
The whole in your face, random humor is very good. Not because it that's the way it as much as because it allows writers to add more jokes than sticking with the plot. Writers for the Simpsons are able to write jokes based on what's happening and not how all of a sudden a Racoon jumps out of the TV, Lois Blouse, and a shotgun all in the same episode, and have Jeff Foxworthy appear in the closet. The Simpsons can write jokes upon their jokes which is all on the plot, which, in my opinion, makes it written much better.
It ties into the whole moral/parody thing as well... Simpsons write upon actual events sometimes and creates it into its own storyline, making the whole episode a parody, or they will take different historical events and put them into the episode as supporting details. This also leads me to believe its written better.
How about this. One episode has Bart and Milhouse at a convention (yes, another convention) where Bart says "Hey! Look! It's Futurama creator Matt Groening." where as Milhouse replies :I Hope he'll sign my Bender doll!". As well as other times the show makes fun of the producers and network (Family Guy too has taken this joke of making fun of the network), displaying the producers as crazy guys with eye patches and guns and scars, to drunks and a few others.

I'll agree that the Simpsons has way more money to pay writers to sit around and research fucking triple layered jokes, but look at the original-3rd seasons. Mostly crap with a few unchewed peanuts here and there worth looking for.
And Don't even get me started on the whole "parody vs pop culture" reference thing. Because there IS no "parody vs pop culture" reference thing. It breaks down like this.
Parody must be a reference to something else. Maybe not "pop culture" per se, but something.
Pop culture references can take many forms, but you will not see a simple reference(i.e. naming the thing being referred to) outside of VH1
and MTV2.
No, that's just a parody of MC Hammer's song. It's an 80's pop culture reference, but it's mostly a parody.
Oh yeah. Another thing that made it a less than perfect post. Wtf do mean by this sentence? Osiris be nimble, Osiris be quick, Osiris jump back and forth in the same sentence.

The town was founded by Buffalo Springfield
Isn't it Jebadiah Springfield who founded the town?
OsirisGuy429
19th June 2005, 07:34 AM
I meant by that sentence that the way the song is presented is a parody rather than a pop culture reference. The parody was taken from a pop culture reference in the 80's.
Understand now?
I'm not really jumping back and forth. It's two different things that can or cannot relate to each other. In this particular instance it comes between that, it only referes back to it.
Oh and I guess I did have another mistake, it was Jebbadiaha(sp?) Springfield. I was listening to some Buffalo Springfield so I was kinda thinking of that. My bad on that. So scratch that out.
To be quite honest if I wanted to argue over what was better I would have gone to &TOTSE and argued with the 12 year olds about which cartoon is better and that what is my favorite kind of ice cream is. Unless it's something worth pointing out I'm going to try and not to respond cause these things are ridiculous and I love both of these shows, more than anyone knows and just becuase I think one is better I have to get into these pointless quarrals.
Why can't we all just pop in some cartoon DVD's, either Family Guy or Simpsons, don't matter, smoke a J, and laugh and piss our pants? Sound good?
