View Full Version : How loud is a window breaking really?

I want to do some car shopping tonight, because it's raining heavily and nobody will hear me getting into their cars. But what about days where I'm not so lucky to have this kind of noise? I imagine a window breaking to be a loud noise, however I'm unsure if this is paranoia or truth. Breaking into a car with a hammer, should I be worried about the noise? Or should I pursue other methods of opening the car, like prying the windows open maybe? Your feedback is appreciated.

How loud it is doesn't matter, as long as you are fast getting away from the car!

its loud. but no matter how loud it is youre still not gonna be around for too much longer anyways. hell. if its loud that just gives you some entertainment after your break. waiting for the sirens to come after youre far far far away : ). i guess what im trying to say is no matter how loud it is youre not gonna be there for over 10 15 sec. 'id assume' so wouldnt really matter.. in a parking lot. i guess if its in someones front driveway or infront of their house theres a chance theyll come out themselves with a shotty or something.

there's always the method of prying the door open enough to reach the door lock. as long as you can get you're fingers or a crowbar in enough to bend it out you should be good. and there isnt much to bending it back(incase you want to sell it to someone later).

just reading a little bit about how loud an actual window break is and it said that most window break sensors listen for the frequency of glass breaking but i finally found one that had an actual decibel(dB) measurement. it said that it goes off with the sound of glass breaking anywhere between 95 and 135 dB. to put that into perspective a little bit, a normal conversation you have between yourself and a friend is around 65 dB, most lawn mowers hit around 90dB, Ambulance sirens are 120dB, a shotgun blast is about 165dB, space shuttle launches reach 185dB, and the current world record for dB drag racing is only 178.3dB

Why would you even consider breaking a car window with a loud ass hammer, when you can do it damn near silently with some ninja rocks!

http://forum.rorta.net/showthread.php?t=1793

Just break the ceramic from the spark plugs and toss the ceramic at the passenger window.

that wasnt tempered glass in that video. tempered glass is much harder to break, will the ninja rocks work just as well?

Hell yes, the ability to break tempered glass car windows is how ninja rocks became famous...

Tempered glass completely shatters if there's a small crack anywhere on its surface, which means that ninja rocks can ONLY break tempered glass (because they will create small cracks in the window). Ninja rocks don't work on regular glass, because they DONT break with small cracks.

FYI just about the only thing made out of tempered glass are car windows. House windows are almost never tempered.

Well thanks dudes. I'm going to get a crowbar out of the garage, because I have absolutely $0 (the exact reason why I was going car shopping) to buy any spark plugs with to make ninja rocks (I'm kind of shit at throwing so I might just use a makeshift slingshot type device to go with it). Perhaps when I have money I will order that life hammer, the video of it being used showed it was actually very quiet.

I wouldn't imagine you'd have to good at throwing to hit a car window from a couple of feet away.

Your kidding right? spark plugs cost what, a dollar at walmart/autozone/just about anywhere, or just steal one instead of paying for it. You could probably just find an old one in your garage somewhere. They dont have to be brand new or even in good condition.

I'm not kidding. Things are more expensive here than in America, and we don't have spark plugs in supermarkets. I'll wait til I have some money and get some spark plugs, then.

you do have to throw the shit out of them. i tried them yesterday, throwing it and just gradually throwing harder and i almost threw out my shoulder when it actually broke. they are fun little toys though.

Your ignorant of prices, they cost $2 at Home Depot in America, I was there yesterday.
ALso I never once bought one because they are so easy to steal, you don't even have to take it out of the package.

I misunderstood, but you can still lift them VERY easily, and I highly doubt that there would be that much of a price difference.

one thing about car windows you need to know is there hard as all hell to break, you need to put as much force as you can into hitting it or throwing a rock at it, because the sound of it breaking is nothing compared to the sound of a rock hitting it hard but not breaking it, if you hit it with a crowbar but dont break it you can fracture your wrist or even break it, sides which the glass explodes both ways so if your really close shards could cut you, be careful it really is a lot tougher then youd think

WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU BREAKING WINDOWS???!!!

DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THEY COST TO REPLACE?

im not here to preach, but seriously...steal from the big guys not from little people!

anyway, if youre gonna do it, get a pump wedge and any sort of strong thin and long steel rods to pop the lock switch and youre in the car no broken glass or noise. literally takes 5 minutes.

h**p://www.ehow.com/video_2331907_wedge-tool-auto-lockouts.html

ive had my windows broken and cds and gps stolen. not fucking cool. the gps and cds are easily replaceable, an expensive glass window is a bitch to replace, not to mention the haggling with insurance.

and search google next time

Why does it matter?
Sound of breaking glass is not out of the ordinary.

If you must use ninja rocks (break the cistern on the porcelain toilets).

ok, i dont know where you are or anything but breaking glass is out of the ordinary in most places. people associate the sound of breaking glass with destruction, burglary, vandalism, etc.

I can see you're new to all this crime shit and have high paranoia. No one is gonna fucking call the cops just because they heard glass shatter.

If you must then use ninja rocks from the porcelain of a toilet's cistern lid (yes you need to break this, no it won't draw attention just because of a smash).

I get sick of you damn kids. Stop being pussies and take risks for yo money or you may as well not bother.

The way I've been using to car shop is to pry the mini window behind the back window with a screwdriver really hard, which shatters the glass very quietly. Then you just push the glass in and have a look around the car.

Use the white part broken off of a sparke plug and a sling shot or throw it kinda hard. It's quiet as can be. Tinted windows are nice because everything stays in one piece and you just push it in. Car burglaries are hardly even investigated. At least my car wasn't whenever I got jacked. I begged them to run it for prints and they just blew me off.

because its not cost effective. it takes too much money to get fingerprints and doesnt get enough results.

Why use a spark plug when you can use something bigger and still just as quiet like parts of a toilet cistern.

Prying windows open is good, but only some cars have the quarterglass. I was thinking about making a "DIY lifehammer", just supergluing the ninja rocks to a hammer. What do you guys think?
