View Full Version : Lock bumping and laundromats

I'm actually not so interested in laundromats as I am coin-op washers/dryers of the sort found in apartment buildings. There are a fair number of large complexes not all far from me with easy access to the laundry rooms and no cameras. I've looked at the locks and they seem to be standard types (not tubular or whatever). So my question is, does anybody know if these locks are vulnerable to bumping? (FWIW they don't seem to have been retrofitted recently). If so where could I get blanks/old keys I could file down into bump-keys? Or is this just a stupid idea that should be dropped?

In my fairly limited experience these types of devices these locks are Tubular ones, but you have said they are not.

Pictures would be great!

A description or picture of the locks would help. Im pretty sure that they are tubular. Thats the kind that is most vulnerable to bumping. If you really want to you can break in and take the key to make a mold or copy. Often that is more work that required. If you can get a good look at the key you can simply get all the keys that look similar to that in blanks and try them all in your lock. If t fits it can be cut into a bump key. The only problem is that more than one will probably fit so you'll have to try both of them as bump keys. And bump keys aren't very easy to make.

I haven't looked at the exact type you speak of but i think i can assume they are similar in size to mailbox locks. If so, bumping is very easy seeing as their pins have no springs to retard your bumping efforts.

I don't have a digital camera and/or a scanner ( I have very limited resources right now). Even if I did thought it would be hard for me to get a decent picture, the lock has a flattened metal dome over it with piece of metal (in a groove that that allows 360 degrees of spin) directly in front of the keyhole. There is either a slit or a semi circle to allow the keyy access and a ~1 inch gap to the actual keyhole. Most of the nameplates have Greenwalt Industries on the front But Google doesn't produce any useful links. There are two other locks on the machine(both tubular) but they don't provide access to to coinbox, Ialready tried my tubular picks on them. By shining a light on the other lock I can see what looks to be a standard pin and tumbler setup. I have no idea where the keys would be kept, and honestly I'd rather not deal with any B and E, the laundry rooms are not locked and I'm looking for a stealth-type operation here.

theres a really good australian movie with heath ledger about junkies surviving, they do something really unique by just openly stealing a washing machine from a persons laundry (in flat complex's we have shared laundies which are usually unlocked) if theres no camera's or your cocky enough just steal one, or two, if its in a public laundromat it will probably have a chain behind it but with a pair of bolt cutters you could make a couple of hundred in a few minutes

You have to be Muscles Mcgurk to steal a washing machine, and it probably has 1/4 of what it's worth just sitting in the coin box.

Thats why people have comealongs and pallet jacks. But if you have enough resources to get something like that you could easily commit a more rewarding crime.

Bingo! I managed to find coin boxes of this type on EB(a)y! So I should be able to modify the keys for luck bumping :). I know this sounds like a fairly low reward crime, but I have access to better than 200 coin-op washer/dryers in the multiple apartment complexes by me, so if I average ( a very conservative) $5 a machine it adds up real fast for very little risk. I should be able to clear out the machines in on weekend and there are 3-4 more clusters of aprtment complexes that are not too far from me.

it would be heavy but with two people it could be rewarding, but if your doing the main idea here to just stael change, lock the locks back up and make sure the entrance is blocked off like some kids playing a prank, so the owner of them doesnt think he was robbed just that no one came to do there washing due to not being able to get in

That is more or less the plan (in my dreams, of course). Like I said low risk and potentially very rewarding from the number of machines involved if nothing else.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that everything went acoording to plan, though these locks are a *BITCH* to bump! However with a lot of practice and a couple of wasted keys I managed to master the technique. I've been on a rampage for the last couple of months and now have enough money to try my hand at something legit I've always wanted to try but never had the money to do. Anyway this might be something for you guys to try, the details are in my original post and the rest is just practice and a bit of legwork...

1-How many did you have to bump?

2-How much did you make?

3-Just out of interest, what legitimate thing are you planning on doing now?

Can your "friend" take a picture of what the bump key he uses looks like?
