Lets say I wanted to put a few 12v case fans in a PC but there's only one power connection from the motherboard. Would it be ok to solder the wires from the different fans together and then connect to the power connection on the motherboard?

I would imagine that it would not get enough juice to run all of the fans.

Either that, or it might be enough to short the connection, given the power source being sapped simultaneously from several different areas.
Granted, I also don't know jack shit about hardware. :?

So what would be a suggestion? Could I connect them somehow to the PSU and avoid the motherboard?

just get a 12v battery and put it behind your computer...hook it up to them and put a switch on 'em. that way they come on when you want them to. they could be running all the time or never. but like the other guy said i dont really know anything about hardware...or well...computers. but yeah.

Don't take my word for it...but it should work fine if solder it the way you said. But then again, I got zapped 3 fucking times just today by experimenting with a cd drive while the fucking computer was on. Electricity is the ultimate drug.

if you must, get an extra power supply. one that's bigger than the one you currently have. then buy a few y adapters and plug a few fans directly into the power supply through the y adapters.
i wouldnt try to route too much power through your motherboard. granted im not a genious about all of this, but it doesnt seem safe to me. bigger power supply and if you wanna go all out, a fan controller that slips into a drive bay. then you can hook up quite a few fans and even adjust the power that they get

Bollocks....
Plug the fans in via a molex plug on the psu...
Yellow and black, you'll be right as rain.

is the molex plug the on-out plug that allows you to plug in another device to it so it isn'r wasting a plug on a fan? convoluted question, but I don't feel like googlin it.

There was no molex on the cpu that fitted. Doesn't matter now though, the solder worked. Next time though, if I'm using more than 2 (let's say 5) what do I do if there is no molex from the psu to fit?

buy an adapter and make it fit :) they make fan adapter to plug them to the PSU.
or, you could always just make it fit. I wouldnt put too many fans onto one mobo connection though, 5 might kill something.
