Why are you a Vegetarian?
I was raised like that, my body isn't used to meat so I'd throw it up if I tried eating it, I like animals and I clearly don't need to eat them to survive, so I won't. Stuff like that.

Yeah sorry VX, i eat alot more meat than i do veggies, i eat a fair bit of fruit though.
Meat is just so juicy and beautiful to eat and there is so many variates and things you can do with meat.
You can only do things to a certain extent with veges, meat is limitless.
But i dont care if someone was a vegan oe vegetarian, i had a vegan missus at one stage and she loved man meat.(crap joke ay)
Do what you want and eat what you want, just dont force it on me and im fine with it.

So you'd judge someone's intellect based on their diet? That's pretty shallow of you, Odin.
No need to be sorry, Nox. I don't have as much of a problem with the concept of people eating meat as I do with the way that animals are 'farmed' and treated before being eaten. I disagree about vegetarian cooking being limited.

Pain is natural, and life feeds on life. Unfortunately the human population has grown to the point that we require farming life artificially to feed on it, and often we choose to farm animals.
Animals experience stimulus when we farm them, and when harvested, the chemicals in their brain cause them to experience physical pain. Perhaps their artificial being causes additional psychological pain as well as physical.
I think both physical and psychological pain can or could be measured in the future with neuroscience, based on chemical levels and stress indicators, as well as pleasure and happiness.
Although there may be crude measurements at first, once all variables are accounted we could weigh the value of pain and pleasure and punish the livestock industry for surpassing the pain to pleasure ratio that their food brings (i.e. the pain the animal experiences cannot outweigh the pleasure brought to the average consumer from their product)
From here regulation could be taken place in order to insure the horrid slaughterhouse practices could be fixed, and...ugh I don't know, I guess that's it.
I'm still too indecisive to change my eating habits, but I think we need more aggressive laws against inhumane killing of animals. I mean, come on, they're being killed like animals!:damnit1:

Animals kill other animals, animals eat other animals. It is a natural way of life, and the use of slaughter houses is to deal with the vast amount of people. I'm not going to change my eating because people think that it is cruel to kill animals and eat them. When animals hunt other animals down often times they are not killed right then but die slowly, it is a natural process for animals to kill and eat them. It is a natural process that has gone on for thousands of years and it has been successful the whole time. There is no need to change this because people feel that we can live on vegtables. I don't know how other people feel, but I enjoy eating a nice juicy steak.

I like meat. And I'm planing to get in to hunting in the future.
That way I can get the ultimate fresh meat :)
I am what I am and I don't give a fuck about animals dying, true it is sometimes useless like dolphins dying in fishing nets and stuff like that.
Animals live to be eaten by other animals, it is as simple as that.
You can choose not to eat them but some other will.
I also have a small veggie plot on my yard.

I enjoy almost all foods, and the thing I like more than eating those foods is trying new foods.
Every Vegetarian or vegan I've ever seen looked unhealthy. usually underweight.
One of the main reasons I like meat so much is because of the protein in it. Sure you can find protein in vegatables, but not as much on the overall. And certainly not as good of quality as meat protein.
The whole being mean to animals thing...shut up. :smileysex
Even though my opinion of vegetable loving is negative it doesn't bother me when I'm friends with someone who is. but Odins probably right. The majority of vegans or vegatarians are more than likely stupid.

I'm a vegan, now before everyone says that I am stupid (etc.) I do have reason, vegies don't go bad as fast (and I can grab them out of peoples plots when I am moving), and when I have a steady source of income, it doesn't cost as much to buy vegies. Oh, and I was raised vegan, so, similarly to VX, my body would react badly to meat. Now everyone can say that I am an idiot for not eating meat.

VX, can you explain what health benefits there are from being vegan?
Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables are always good. And the vegan/vegetarian alternatives to meat (stuff rich in protein mostly, like soy based stuff) are digested a lot easier. Our bodies' digestive systems aren't made for digesting a lot of meats, so what actually gets through takes much longer, and it also builds up over a period of years.
Although a lot of vegans/vegetarians don't eat properly, and end up with protein and iron deficiencies, the people who actually put some thought into what they're eating can get just as much vitamins, protein, etc as someone who eats meat. We just digest our food quicker and don't pay as much for it.
FAZEone
5th February 2009, 08:16 AM
What I really meant was how does not eating certain foods (excluding meat) be beneficial to your health? Vegans don't eat any animal by-products right?
.VX
5th February 2009, 08:24 AM
Like milk and eggs? I don't think that anyone's saying that they're unhealthy, that specifically is more about invading the animal's rights. Although soy milk is incredibly healthy, but it tastes revolting IMO.
Mr.A
13th February 2009, 10:08 AM
It seems to me that most vegetarians are vegetarians for odd/wrong reasons. Sure .VX, you can gain that missing protein from plants like Soy. My argument against that is that soy is femine like in the protein quality world. I forget the actual details of the study but in-a-nutshell scientist found that soy made humens produce higher amounts estrogen(female related hormon). This is what turns most bodybuilders that I know off from it. Sure there are slightly significant sorces of protein in other plants but nothing compares to the quality of the protein in meat. Protein, like anything else, is much more complex in our bodies than it sounds. Our bodies "like" or absorb some proteins better than others. Specifically red meat proteins dominate that field.
Yes, my stand on why I'm not a vegetarian is up to taste and less on practicality and it seems to me that all food is great in someway or another but definitely some are better for you than others(as long as were are talking about the health of our bodies here).
In-a-nutshell I'm trying to say I definitely don't think the healthiest nutrition is obtained from becoming a vegetarian(avoiding meat). We have teeth for both plant eating and meat eating, hints why we call ourselves omnivores.
The only logical reason I see a person wanting to be a vegetarian would be because of some severe alergy that eating meat causes them to trip.
.VX

That's pretty interesting. Have you got a source or something? Because I eat shitloads of soy based stuff.
Mr.A
13th February 2009, 11:00 AM
I know the information is out there on the net, I'll look for it when I have more time.
I remember hearing about it for the first time from someone I trusted to give me nutritional information. I checked his fact and it was true from what I remember, so from that day forward I never touched soy again.
Like I said, I'll look later when I have more time, or if you find it first, please post it.
Sorry I couldn't help you any further at the moment.

EDIT: As I was looking through that site I found this (http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Vegetarian_eating?OpenDocument). I've had blood tests recently and I'm getting enough iron, etc ...
Mr.A
13th February 2009, 11:23 AM
Ah there it is! Thanks for posting the link.
I just fear that being a vegetarian might have furture unforseen side effects and cause diseases too far ahead in time for science to test right now. Kind of like exessive eating of large amounts of carbohydrates seems to lead to diabetes in the long run. Its just easier to see that carbs are bad in large amounts short term because they make you a fat ass. :sasmokin:
Edit: I do think that a veg could be perfectly fine given they have enough supplements to fill in the gaps for the foods they restrict themselves to though. Still more fun to me to not restrict myself and munch on a juicy chicken thigh rather than a handfull of pills! lol.

[off topic] I watched it with my best friend in theatres. Then nonstop when it arrived on dvd.
Then I made the brilliant decision of watching it with my bf at the time. Heh, turns out he wasn't such a fan of subversive comedy. Which is wonderful that I found out then. Hence, bf at the time. [/off topic]
Oh yeah, healthy. Be it. I nearly forgot the topic du jour. Of course, I say this as I consume a fuckton of energy drinks, my main vice.
haha "at the time" so i'm guessing the subversive comedy factor was a big one in choosing "yo' man"?
ahhh, energy drinks, im basically addicted to monster... i cant get enough of those fuckin things... i used to drink a 12 pack a day but really cut down now lol

Caffeine is so bad for you, its the reason I gave up coffee and the energy drinks. Someone just the other day was telling me how he used to be a long distance runner and caffeine ruined it for him, I felt sorry for him.:trink26:

24th February 2009, 09:33 AM
@.VX: I've been trying to figure out what I should be eating...mostly salads I make at home with romaine lettuce, carrotts, a lil turkey meat, broccoli with a touch of dressing. Fruits like strawberries, raspberries, pomegranates, oranges and apples. The only nuts lately are pistachios and almonds. Juices and some cereals. Only stuff I really enjoy but I'm slowly reaching out and trying other vegetables. Like celery and the carrots. I usually detest them but I'm working on making myself like them.:shhh:
You'll need to have lots of nuts and legumes to substitute the meat, but apart from that it seems good. If you're looking to try new foods, then you should try some Hare Krishna dishes.
Its an interesting lifestyle change so far, I feel more solid and strong, more well rested, more energy and better well being. Healthier I guess you would call it.:biglaugh:

Interesting....
I've always known the health benefits of soy and wanted to include it in my diet but was turned off by what I thought prevously to be true. Which is that soy makes men's testosterone go down. After a lot of reading I decided that was false. So the idea of putting it in my diet right now seems like an excellent idea, have to pick some up next time I'm out. Soy milk always had a bland taste but oh well I'm in it for health. Maybe some tofu in my salads would be nice. Tofu is good.
@.VX: Thought I would tell you my stance on soy has changed. I was wrong.:wave:
I didn't really eat alot of red meat before, but I suppose I would if it was there, I still don't see too much wrong with it, its just usually high in bad fats. So I stick to leaner meats. Thanks for the legumes and nuts advice, I'll use it. I'll have to look into this Hare Krishna stuff.

I think I've tried it, it certainely looks tasty. My favorite tasting alcoholic drink is by far some Southern Comfort. They did such a good job in that drink, covering up the taste of alcohol with sugars. lol. High proof too of course.

I dislike the taste of soy milk, so I don't drink it unless I'm out of cow's milk. Tofu I generally avoid because it takes on a weird slimy texture if it's not cooked properly, which it often is. But when it is cooked properly it's great. I buy processed soy Sausages and "Not Chicken" (that's what it's called) from the vegetarian corner of the supermarket. Although in Australia there's no where near as many vegetarian options in supermarkets as there are in Europe, and probably America.
There's also something which is said sort of like corn/kworn which I think is made out of some sort of mushroom, and that's deliscious. (It can't be bought in Aus, so I've only ever heard people say it, and subsequently have no clue at all how it's spelt)

Hmm, I'm a big fan of cows milk. I'll keep that in mind about the tofu. Not Chicken? lol that cracks me up. I'm avoiding processed foods so anything thats made to imitate anything is probably out, but I would try it if I had seen it. I've never heard of this kworn, but I'll have to be on the lookout. The foods I'm eating already are delicious, but I know I'll tire of this new habit unless I venture out to find new foods.
No offense Hatter but fuck NYC, that place is nuts. lol. Your welcome and goodnight again.

Yes, it's cooked, but some of the dishes are absolutely delicious and quite unlike any other sort of food. It's also incredibly cheap, and if it's actually cooked by people of that religion then they'll give it to you for free if you can't afford it.

Awesome.
I've heard that in regards to red meat. People are generally more easy going and relaxed after they stop eating it. What meats have you been eating?
Mr.A
26th February 2009, 08:23 AM
Actually the only meat I've eating since I made this "lifestyle" change is turkey, and in very small amounts thus far. Wait, no, I did have a slice of bacon with my breakfast the other day, so I guess just turkey and pork so far. My mind is still open on eating whatever meats are present for my meat in my diet, but that of course could change. Only time will tell.:sly:

Mr.A, are you still mostly veg? Got any thoughts on the long term effects? And is it cheaper?
Mr.A
12th March 2009, 09:19 AM
Yes I am. It has been a wonderful change and I regret none of it so far. Actually recently I also went completely organic. I wouldn't say I've been doing it long enough to understand long term effects but from what I gather atm they can only be positive. How much food I consume has also been less yet I still use the bathroom just as often. I only eat when I'm hungry and only till I'm full. I try to hit most of my cravings with each meal. A handful of nuts or beans, veggies of any kind, and something sweet usually does me just right. Since I've been eating less, my grocery bills have dropped. My wife and have made this switch together. Before we would spend roughly $120 on groceries about every week and two or three days. Now in that amount of time we only spend around $80. Even though the original reason for changing my nutrition was mostly for the health benefits it has proved to be very nice on the wallet. Who wouldn't want an extra $35 a week?
Oh and also, almost all of my foods now are raw foods. Easy to prepare, no carcinogenic matter. From what I hear, cooked food is carcinogenic. Cancer anyone?:eek2:
Gotta admit, I do treat myself at least once a week to a nice unhealthy, cooked, usually hard on the heart meal. On the plus though, sometimes I make that meal something ok for me to eat, like sushi. Hooray for sushi! Thanks for asking .VX hows all your nutrition doing? Do you require any supplements?
I would definitely recommend this type of change to anyone who is curious to try.
