Materials
- Mortar and Pestle (size may vary depending on how much is being made)
- squeeze bottle(filled with ethanol)
- KNO3 (Potassium Nitrate) or NaNO3 ( Sodium Nitrate)
- C (carbon a.k.a Charcoal)
- S (sulfur)
- Scale
- Paper plates
- Apron (Optional)
Background Information
Mixture exists in a 75:15:10 ratio
75% KNO3 or NaNO3 , 15% C , and 10% S
**Recommendations is use of KNO3 instead of NaNO3 due to the ability to grind the KNO3 better than the NaNO3 but however both are able to be used in the creation of the gun powder.
**It is recommend that you use an apron however it is not necessary.
Directions
1. Using the scale measure out the KNO3 or NaNO3 , C , and S so that it makes the ratio as described above.
2. Grind the KNO3 or NaNO3 put on a plate and set aside.
3. Grind the C put on a plate and set aside.
4. Grind the S put on a plate and set aside.
5. Take all the components and mix them together thoroughly and add little bits of ethanol while mixing to aide in the combination process.
6. After it has been mixed thoroughly let the mixture dry for 24 hours or longer.
7. Either ignite the mixture after it has dried or store in an airtight container as to prevent the mixture from getting any moisture.
Notes
**Warning this process is an exothermic reaction and will produce a good amount of heat it is recommend to not to be close to the reaction as it is happening**
If the gun powder does not light there are a couple of things that may have gone wrong. First off you may have added too much ethanol during the combination stage and it has not fully dried out yet. Another problem may be that your ratio is incorrect and you may have to go back and do the procedure once again.
