I'm sure we could start a free IRC channel.

The more I think about it adding a chat room to the site would probably get more people to join and add to the forum. It would also allow people to quickly discuss things instead of waiting days to get something answered. It does come with a cost though...

Maybe a freenode channel?

The only way to get ppl to really join the irc channel would be to have an advert somewhere and easy to follow guide to joining the channel.

Adding an ad about our IRC channel is a piece of piss.

i don't think we need ads... there would be a decent amount of people on it.

Chatboxes are fun, but they generally destroy forums. People will flock to the chatboxes while the forums die.

This gets suggested a lot. I'm not sure if I like the idea or not.
Let's just try it and see how it goes ...

That's my fear. I don't think an IRC or IM facility should be being used with anyone with under a 100 posts. It's open to exploitation.
redjoker
8th March 2009, 02:36 PM
That is why I say there is a cost. You have to go about determining who gets to join. If done properly though, this forum could only flourish from open chat.
MrMinister
8th March 2009, 08:16 PM
I don't think it would detract from the forum, and honestly IMHO I think rorta has few enough active people that now is the safest time to try something like that.
I think both have their place. I prefer forums for most discussions but I think irc would be fun to screw around on.
Someone make a channel, if it's successful then worry about front end.

I agree, this could be a wonderful idea. The only thing fear is that it might be too much for whoever would be managing it to manage. I'm sure it would be easy, but Rorta the forum still has plenty of work that could be done to it. The amount of people an IRC channel could bring in is what really turns me onto it. My vote goes for it!
MrMinister
8th March 2009, 09:18 PM
It's extremely simple to manage. Most likely it would just be a channel on a server with chanserv, mods get on - they automatically get op'ed.
I doubt they would set up an ircd/server just for one channel.
Someone just set up a fucking channel somewhere!

Anyone can start an unofficial channel/room now. Why wait? But we need a place that's neutral, where some ass can't boot anyone for disagreement or where the moderator is a neutral party, unlike the more vocal people here let's say.

I'd make one if I knew a bit more about them.
Do I need to download any applications? Can they be member-only? And if they're entirely browser based then which site is a good one?
MrMinister
10th March 2009, 06:24 PM
Webbased usually you can go through the server's web interface another good one that might not work depending on how many people are using it(web) is mibbit.com
As far as straight up downloadable clients, I like xchat(2) it's cross platform, all that good stuff. Mirc is popular on 'doze machines but you gotta look at the fags face everytime it loads.
I found a channel for rorta but only had one person in it (I think an admin, if not a mod). I didn't talk with him long enough to figure out if he wanted people on now or if he was waiting to integrate it. It was a dead channel though.
Members only - yeah they can do that very well (probably wont want to though with our small population), you can have it where you need a password to get in the "room"(in irc talk they are called channels). They can be invite only to get in, and I'm sure there are ways I don't even know about.
Setting one up is very simple(a channel), you just pick the server, login to it. Then /join #nameofchannel
if #nameofchannel exists you will enter it (or be asked for password, etc)
if it does not, bam! you just created it. You are(most the time) granted Operator("room admin") privs and can kick/ban people, change the topic , all that good stuff.
I'll meet you on an unrelated channel if you wanna give it a shot.

Use chanserv, make yourself auto opped.
MrMinister, go ahead and start a #rorta channel on whatever server you're on, and let us know where to go

It's been in the pipeline but there's more pressing work to be done on the site first. Unfortunately I have very little time to do anything as paid work has to come before rorta.

Good with me :)
It would be easier to ask fast-answer questions on chat than waiting for a reply here.
That's exactly the reason it's a bad idea. The same would go for a Rorta-Chan. We'd be having people using it as an alternative to posting and sharing the knowledge. All the information exchanged could never be recorded, thus I can't really see the point.

Edit -- I am a tool. Re-read the thread and everything I said was already addressed for the most part.
Anyway, to eliminate the problem of info being shared in the chat but not the forum, I would be glad to go through chat logs every couple of days and post relevant info shared into the appropriate forum. Maybe make a 'chat logs' post in each one, so they are still searchable without making a whole new FAQ or anything on the site.
Also, I have some experience with mIRC scripting so I could probably make a bot with any features the mods would find useful to have in the room. It is actually quite versatile. The room could be used to distribute eBooks and such through XDCC serves if it progresses beyond an idea.
Do we have an actual room yet?

I went to check it out and yea, basically people use it as the equivalent of our Thread About Nothing. It's a miserable excuse for a Live Chat system, on the whole.

If you want to, and your prepared to stick around and potentially mod the thing I have no problem.

I wanted to get this set up this morning, but turns out I am having a HELL of a time connecting to any IRC server at the moment. Already port forwarded and all that, also tried a new version of mIRC with no luck. Will post back when I get it set up.
--edit-- Disabled -all- security on the router and it worked, but I obviously don't want to stay that way, so I'm working on getting it through my firewall, dont know wtf is going on yet.

EFnet, #rorta. Have a bot installed to auto-op users who are put on the list, but that's about it at the moment. Setting up spam protection, etc.

Ahaha...sorry. Will post in a few minutes.
Quick Tutorial to get on Rorta IRC.
Download mIRC here.http://www.mirc.com/get.html
After installing, open it up. You should see something like this. Hit 'continue', then you will have to hit it again until you, of course, pay the registration fee.
http://i44.tinypic.com/2m671ft.jpg
Fill in the info in the next box that comes up. Fake names, etc, doesn't really matter. Your 'nickname' should match your screenname on Rorta so we know who you are. An alternate nickname would be if the one you have chosen is taken. After you fill all that out, click on the 'Servers' tab.
http://i41.tinypic.com/10ge9gp.jpg
Find the 'EFNet' folder in the list, and open it up. Double-click on 'Random Server'...or pick one if you see one that is near you, for speed and such. It will bring you back to the screen with your name and all that. Then, just hit 'connect'!
http://i39.tinypic.com/2sagrjm.jpg
It will connect to the server, and bring up a window asking which channel you want to join. Type in #rorta and press 'Join'. That's it! I will watch the topic so if you have trouble connecting you can holla at me here...otherwise, see you in IRC.

I moved the room to DALnet because the server there has easier options to maintain the room and protect it from takeovers, etc. Original plan was just for me to sit in there 24/7, but I learned quickly that it was not possible after my PC crashed on me numerous times last night.
When you open MIRC, instead of choosing EFnet as a server, just choose DALnet. Other instructions are the same.
