The vBulletin automatically subscribes you for threads, as you may or may not have noticed. If you want to turn this off completely go into the options in your User CP.

Change "Default Thread Subscription Mode" to "Do Not Subscribe" to stop the little subscription icon apprearing and your subscribed threads filling up.
