The unwritten rule(s)
Don?t hit churches, grave yards, privately owned homes, cars etc.
Practice makes perfect, no one can show you how to graffiti, it?s self taught.
DO NOT BITE ANOTHER WRITER?S STYLE.
Clean up your used cans and any other shitty mess after a hit.
Don?t go out of your way to get instant fame, what I mean is don?t deliberately get seen because you see a bunch of hot girls coming down your alley. Fame will come if your big up or good enough.
Don?t fuck around with trains or tracks to cause harm.

Meanings
Remember these meanings may vary town to town, city to city, country to country.

Beef ? To go over another writers work.

Big up ? Your tag all over a town, the dominant tag in a town. ?You can?t go nowhere without seeing that tag, yeah, he?s big up?.

Bite ? If a writer ?bites? he or she has stolen a style or an idea from another writer. This is looked down on in the graffiti culture.

Blackbook ? A writers sketchbook.

Bomb ? A quick but large hit normally consisting of simple shaped letters with an outline and fill, black outline, white fill etc.

Bombing ? When writers are ?bombing? they are out writing.

Buff ? The action taken by local councils when graffiti appears. ?Shit man, my piece got buffed? *My piece got washed/painted off.

Cap ? The nozzle of the spray can.

Character ? Cartoon within a piece. For example Batman, Spiderman or something from the writers imagination. Can take the place of a letter.

Crew ? A gang of writers. The name of a crew usually contains three words which when bombed are shorted to the first letter of each word, ?The Toy Crew? or ?TTC?.

Dope ? ?That?s a ?dope? piece? or ?that?s a ?great? piece.?

Drips ? Part of a piece, deliberate drips of paint to give effect to a hit.

Fill ? Inside colour of a hit.

Flix ? Photo?s of graffiti.

Get up ? To tag/piece/bomb a lot of area?s in town.

Hit (UK-NrthEast) ? To have tagged or to tag - ?I hit the market last night? FT ?I?m gonna hit the station.?

Hogged ? When a writer takes up a long stretch of cart/wall with his work.

Hogtied ? If a wall has been hog tied it?s full.

OTR ? ?On The Run? Brand of pen.

Piece- A big production taking up lot?s of hours, even days and produced with A LOT of paint.

SCS ? ?Spray can spread? A female writer or a writers girlfriend/sister.

Sticker ? A sticky piece of paper with a writers tag on it.

Tag - A writers signature, the most simple form of graffiti consisting of a scrawl and perhaps stars, speech marks, a crown or some other type of decoration. Writers sometimes add ?one? (rare ?two?) and ?er? to the end of a tag. The tag in some cases can be shortened to the first two, or the first and last letter. and ?A writers piss stain? To show he?s been there, to mark his turf.

Tagger ? A writer.

Toy ? Either a newbie to graffiti or someone who generally sucks at graffiti.

Whitag ? When a writer gets paranoid half way through a hit and makes an arse of it. ?he must have whitag on that one? Meaning ?The cops must have came there? or?sommit gave him the spooks on that shit?.

Developing a Handstyle
Thanks to AKER for the flix

1)Write your tag in simple form.
http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/reload88@btinternet.com/detail?.dir=/799b&.dnm=ecd8.jpg

2)Give your tag a tilt to the left or right.
http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/reload88@btinternet.com/detail?.dir=/799b&.dnm=1c9a.jpg

3)Add some arrows to the bottom ends of the longer letters. You could also swirl an arrow all the way around the tag.
http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/reload88@btinternet.com/detail?.dir=/799b&.dnm=29cb.jpg

4)Add crowns, speech marks or other decorative symbols. Don?t go overboard and don?t get to confident if you?re toy.
http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/reload88@btinternet.com/detail?.dir=/799b&.dnm=5098.jpg

Drips
For drips simply add straight parallel lines to bits of your tag, fat from the top thinner towards the bottom.

The best advice I was ever given when I asked for graffiti help was: ?Grab a fucking pen, go out, tag the shit out of your town and learn on your own. Millions of sketches and tags later, go out and paint. No fucker can teach any fucker to writer. It?s all learnt through experience.?

-Reload.

Noone here really tags anything. Every now and then I may see ths side of a building that's been hit but in reality the owner of the building paid someone to paint it up to draw attention for business.i ran into a guy painting on the road in my neighborhood once. and what he put down was rather uncool. a circle with a slash through it with a queer looking stick figure kinda guy in it and the words "no cornballs allowed" was under it. I saw the guy doing it... What kinda stupid fuck takes his leisurely time painting something THAT gay in the middle of the road with people walking by?

If it weren't for the fact that it'd put me in bad standings with the cops who I'm friends with, and if I had the money to burn, I'd likely paint things up. BTW, since there's a lack of anyone worth the money that they put into it here, there's not much in the way of street talk.

Are there any worth while pieces around that you cold maybe take pics of? I'd like to see some REAL stuff, not something that someone paid for...

Yeah, I hate "legal" walls, the whole concept of graff is demolished when it becomes legal... On legal walls you tend to see something that is big and wonderful but in my opinion it's too big and too wonderful.

I'm lucky enought to live right opposite some tracks so I get to see some shit hot hitz on passing trains and living close by two major citys I can go on missions to view all kinds.

But the best graffiti in my opinion isn't these big masterpieces that have taken days to paint, (why've they taken days? Cause they're legal) but the quick ten minute stuff, that you don't have to stare at for half an hour to appreciate it, with a at the most four colors.

Anyways here we go...

Respect the fact that you don't wanna upset the cops but you could always do graff in a blackbook and throw up some marker tags around town. Just keep all your stuff out of your home in a safe place and don't get seen, I would say don't boast neither but you don't seem the type.

Respect man, keep safe.

I dont see any of that shit around here. everything here is a wall portrait, or a name tag that's 2 feet by 2 feet on the side of a wall hidden behind a dumpster than noone will ever see. some of those were pretty nice though. No way in hell they only took 10 minutes though lol

Thats an awesome post there reload man. Boy how things have chnaged.

Anyway, i was wondering if you would mind, if i adaped the post and posted it to our achives?

Of course you would get the final say over the adapted version.

All of our aticles are written in house, so you can consider yourself a member of the family i guess.

I'll take a camera into town sometime, and take some pics of how Australians tag, there arent many left, as the council have a clean up team, but i'll see what i can do....

From talking to a few people, i am told that tagging here is very much about exposure. And that trains are very good, as they are constatly moving from place to place. Is it like that in england, or america?

RELOAD
3rd October 2005, 11:02 PM
Sure you can adapt and place it in the archives mate.

I'm not to sure about America and I can't speak for everyone in the UK but if a writer is like me he'll tag for exposure, there's one dude called Banksy (www.bansky.co.uk) who gives a good interview on this,, and yeah, trains are perhaps the best because you'll get them going from places like Newcastle all the way up to places in Scotland, on that one journey think how many county's, towns and villages it passes through, fucking amazing man.

Another good place for exposure and respect is high up places, anywhere which is risky you know, and when someone see's a big ass throw up 40ftup in the centre of a clock tower, people are like "how the fuck did he get up there?!".

From my expirience these are good places for max exsposure:
> Coal Trains.
> Motorway Road signs.
> Speed Cam boxes (a black tag really stands out with the fluoresent yellow).
> Motorway Overpasse's.
> Clock towers.
> Car park information boards (tourists and shit ALWAYS look at these things).
> Bus windows (use an etching tool for the windows).

TIP: When choosing a tag, use a name which has no meaning to you... It keeps the cops baffled. Keep a clean house. Don't show Non-Writers your work. Admit to nothing.

THErAPIST
4th October 2005, 02:22 AM
remember what I said about the only tags here suck ass and are always hidden? yeah some dumb fuck tagged the side of the dumpster behind the store that i work at. not only is it hiden, but it's done in black permanent marker. he did it twice. one is a stupid lookinq question mark and under it it says "question reality" then it has a "XA" inside an oval. on the other side of the dumpster he did it again except this time the question mark sucks even worse, and it says in really small letters "fucking bannana", then under it it says Xander Animal.

ok so from this we can see that the guy can't spell (who writes banana with 3 n's?).
he's scared (as is evidenced by the fact that the side that people CAN see looks horrible and rushed.)
he's childish (he said fuckign bannanas... c'mon now. be somewhat original or something)
and finally we can tell that he goes by Xander Animal

It's sad really
I think I'm going to round up a few friends, get everyone to throw cash in for gas, and ride around town looking for tags. I would of course take pics, just like I will the ones at work.

Do it!

The town I tag had a major clean up of most tags and paint pieces so I'll go out tommorow night with the paint pens, I'll take the camera etc and if I see any un-buffed tags from the past or from other writers I'll get them too, could take some paint out and do a quick bomb depending on filth activity.

Might get some action flix too, who knows?

Ohhh, reload is at college tommorow. So some bus flix and campus shots will be done.

Anyways, after trawling through the hard drive of my old computer I have salvaged a few tag and sticker flix I collected from the web a while back. Here you go?

And By the way, I enjoyed reading your first post in this topic, gave me alot more knowledge..
even made me realize that I know a "Big Up" .
His writer's name is "Kaas". ( Kaas is a Dutch word for Cheese )

Try REVO or REVOL mate, save on paint and it'll be quicker\easier to tag. If you use myspace or bebo don't post photos of your work to be on the safeside. If you want feedback distant your username from your tag and don't blatantly state you did it. Just a tip ;)

EDIT: Vandal Squad (http://www.vandalsquad.com/) has a program that you can sign up for and use online or just download for free that lets you paint freights and a few other vechicles, pretty good for practice\novelty\boredom if you deep in the scene.

most of the sentiments i am seeing uttered itt are retarded.

there is no problem with legal, consigned graffiti. graffiti is an art form, and it doesn't matter whether it was done legally or illegally - being fond of graffiti simply because it's against the law is fucking retarded and the HEIGHT of childishness.
also, with some people's talent, they deserve to be payed. the major pieces you see on the sides of buildings in cities like NYC and montreal are better than any stupid billboard, and, for certain shops, increase business trillionfold.

my philosophy for graffiti is that people walk around with their eyes closed, head down, immersed in their private worlds, without looking at the world around them. maybe some people look at the other people, but they don't pay attention to the buldings - i mean, unless it's a castle or some other architectural wonder - and graffiti, that is, art on the sides of walls, increases peoples' awareness and appreciation for the world surrounding them.

also, there is the simple aesthetics of it - that a pretty picture looks nicer than some plain brick or concrete.

it could be argued that tags are ugly, and yes, probably 50% of the tags i see suck and shouldn't be there, but the good ones are attractive, and are interesting to look at, and even they help increase the pedestrian's spatial awareness.

my tag is "TAKE", or, alternatively, "4AKE". usually, being the child i am, i tag around school with a black sharpie - on desks, lockers, bathroom stalls, etc. now that schools over and my sharpies are dead, i am kind of at a fucking loss.

when i lived in montreal - montreal, next to like NYC is probably the biggest city for graffiti in north america - i knew of, but never went to because i wasn't into tagging then, a fucking store, a shoppe, that sold graffiti equipment - markers, nibs for markers, cans, nibs for cans. all of that shit.

but now i live in asshole toronto and there's nothing. my only hope to get a marker would be online, which i can not do, and i'm not crafty enough to make one on my own.

maybe i could, though.

:(

Back in 1983, SHOK1's art teacher banned him from doing Art O'level, not long before he was allegedly sacked for selling drugs to another pupil. SHOK1 had found life drawing incredibly boring and refused to behave.

Having made his name in the global graffiti scene, these days SHOK1 is still busily ignoring rules and boundaries and making work across a wide variety of cultures and media.

He has been drawing pretty much his entire life and is now working towards more spontaneous, conceptual works.

We have no idea how the teacher turned out.

TOX MIDLANDS UK
If they ever create a graffiti Hall of Fame, one of the first inductees will surely be the mysterious figure known as Tox. He?s been spamming the London rail infrastructure with his tag for years. That was until last year, when he seems to have rethought his errant ways after having an ASBO slapped on him. But a recent sighting of his work suggests he may be up to his old tricks. So has he come out of retirement?
The heyday came in 2003, when ?Tox03? covered every available inch of the Metropolitan line,
The young TOX is so buried in ASBOs that he?s barely entitled to leave his bedroom without risking arrest. But still he persists, and his notoriety has only increased.

Writing Styles
Taken from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graffiti#Styles) edited slightly with thanks. ~Reload.

Throw-Up aka Fill-In
Normally painted very quickly with two or three colors, sacrificing aesthetics for speed. Throw-ups can also be outlined on a surface with one color.
http://www.robotswillkill.com/graffiti/07272006032951ThrowupGroningen.jpg
Above: Chino throw-up

Piece aka Production
A "piece" is a more elaborate representation of the writer's name, incorporating more stylized "block" or "bubble" letters, using three or more colors. This of course is done at the expense of timeliness and increases the likelihood of the artist getting caught.
http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/930538/2/istockphoto_930538_graffiti_piece.jpg
Above: Jeya piece

Wildstyle
A more complex style is "wildstyle", a form of writing involving interlocking letters, arrows, and connecting points. These pieces are often harder to read by non-writers as the letters merge into one another in an often undecipherable manner.
http://www.graffiti.org/fresno/sleep7.jpg
Above: Sleep wildstyle

Tag
A tag is the most basic writing of an artist's name in either spray paint or marker. A writer's tag is his or her personalized signature. Tags can come in many shapes and forms. From simple to complicated.
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/450021429/2.jpg
Above: TuC, Inch, Chuc & Skef tags from the North East of England.

Stickers
Some writers also use stickers as a quick way to get-up. While some writers consider this as lazy and a form of cheating, others find that 5 to 10 minutes spent on a detailed sticker is in no way lazy, especially when used with other methods.

Sticker tags are commonly done on blank postage stickers, or really anything with an adhesive side to it.
*Hello My Name Is (http://www.monstercolors.com/img/store/tools/mynameis_stickers.jpg)* stickers can be purchased from MonsterColors.co.uk (http://www.monstercolors.com/store04.php) (10th item down from top). Supplied in packs of 100 for ?5.50(UK)

*Example of a Sticker tag (http://www.richard-seaman.com/Travel/Japan/Misc/Signs/Funny/GraffitiSticker.jpg)*

Stencils
Made by drawing an image onto a piece of cardboard or tougher versions of paper, then cut with a razor blade. What is left is then just simply sprayed-over when placed over a surface, and if done correctly, a perfect image is left.

*Example of Stencil graffiti by Banksy found in London 2005. It's a rat with a camera (http://www.banksy.co.uk/outdoors/images/new%20rats/ratritz.jpg).*

"A graffiti artist thought to be responsible for 50 acts of vandalism in one town is being hunted by police.
The graffiti all features the word "TOR" which is thought to be the tag, or graffiti name, for one person.

The word has been mainly sprayed on to buildings during the evening in ******** town centre and the ******* and ********* areas in ***********.

West ****** Police have appealed for anyone who knows who is the culprit to contact them.

Pc ** ****** said: "We do not view graffiti as art but as an act of criminal damage. It affects the property it defaces and also has a detrimental effect on the surrounding neighbourhood.

"We feel that someone will know who 'TOR' is. This might be a teacher who has seen a similar doodle on a school book, it might be a friend of a friend or might even be another graffiti offender."

TRIBE

"Police in ********** are appealing for help in identifying a prolific graffiti artist believed to be responsible for thousands of pounds of damage.

Officers believe the person responsible is a teenager who has daubed dozens of walls, stretching from ********* through to *****.

His trademark "tag" line appears to be the word "Tribe".

Police have unsuccessfully checked local schools to see if the culprit can be identified.

A North **** Police spokesman said it cost ?500 a day to remove the graffiti, but in many cases it was back again within days. "

ENZO

"Anyone using public transport, particularly to the north-west of London, can't help but notice the ubiquity of his tag: the simple yet winning formula of spraying 'Tox' followed by the last two numbers of the year. Genius! There?s no art or grace to it, in fact, his graffiti is rubbish by any standards. It?s just the sheer quantity that?s won him fame."

"To recap, Tox is the capital?s most infamous tagger. During his nocturnal adventures, he?s sprayed hundreds of walls, signal boxes and trains over much of London?s rail network."

Old news & new news on the North-Eastz INCH.

http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/450021429/17.jpg

Last year police in G******** launched an undercover surveillance operation to catch INCH and the tagger using the name KNT.

But despite hundreds of complaints from members of the public and police work both of their tags are still appearing across the region.

They have been carrying out undercover surveillance to catch INCH and the tagger using the name KNT. Between them they are responsible for hundreds of sites in the region.

http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/450021429/20.jpg

They want people's help to catch the vandal using the name INCH who has sprayed his unique signature on scores of the region's buildings and bridges.

INCH has now become an anonymous cult figure on T******* and has spawned a series of 'copycats' who police also want to track down.

INCH also boasts that police campaigns to catch him have only served to spark more interest in him.

Insp A*** R*****, of the N********* Police Metro unit, said: "He is not currently the subject of any ongoing police investigation. However, if we have any evidence that any person is responsible for an offence of criminal damage, we will investigate it."

Mr Forster said he does not believe INCH still paint sprays buildings. "There is a difference between what these guys are doing in here and what they were up to as teenagers," he said. "Regardless of what they may have done in the past, these are guys trying to earn a living."

http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/450021429/19.jpg

INCH never been publicly unmasked and is known only by his signature tag, but the gallery is now selling his work for up to *** a canvas.

"Taggers cover big areas, travelling on the Metro system, putting their tags all over. INCH is spray painted all over the Metro network, as far as S*********."

Interview with self-styled INCH in which he defends what he does.

Q. It's said that graffiti is an artform, can you explain tagging?
A. Tagging is a form of self expression in its simplest form. It's more location orientated. You can tag in places you couldn't do a full piece.

Q. Is tagging like dogs urinating on lampposts?
A. Marking their territory? I suppose it is. It lets other writers and the public know you've been there.

Q. Many would say tagging is ugly.
A. It's a lower denomination of the full expression.

Q. A lot of graffiti in city centres is tagged. Do you think this presents the average person with the wrong image of writers?
A. I don't think they notice. It's much the same as flyers and poster boards.

Q. Do you think designated areas for graffiti are a positive or negative thing?
A. Definitely positive. To do a proper piece you need time and a large surface to work on. It's not an answer but it's progressive.

Q. What's the aim of your work?
A. Fame?

Q. You save up for a couple of years, buy a nice car, wake up the next day and someone's tagged it. How do you feel?
A. I'd be annoyed. There are taboos and ethics among writers but naturally not everyone adheres.

Go, go gadget dick! INCH

A council is forking out thousands of pounds to give teenagers lessons in "graffiti art skills".

The sessions are run by a group which helped organise a controversial art exhibition featuring notorious graffiti vandal INCH.

Council leaders say the aim is to dissuade young people from becoming graffiti vandals, but there was a warning that they could instead be making the problem worse.

They are shown how to create artwork using spray paint.

"There are also sessions on "social responsibility" with warnings that writing on other people's property is an offence.

So far the council has hired the group on seven occasions to visit youth projects and a city school.

The group, described as a collective of three or four artists, work with youngsters aged 13 to 17 and so far have received a total of ?6,105 from the Government's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

INCH & SPYRA

The council has taken a very dim view of graffiti with tags and other criminal damage, however, for some people some graffiti can be a form of art."

"My fear is that the Lib Dems are simply funding the training of the next generation of graffiti vandals."

A council spokesman said: "NL Graffiti have assured us that they do not believe INCH is one of their members and as far as they are aware INCH has not done any work for the council.

"The council does not knowingly fund anyone who is currently involved in criminal activity.

"If we did it would be by default as we do not know their street name.

"The council has no evidence that any council officer knows who INCH is."

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a teenager suspected of daubing graffiti across the region.

The 16-year-old, who allegedly uses the tag Demo, was charged by police earlier this week and bailed to appear before North magistrates on Tuesday afternoon.

But the youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, failed to appear and now a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Earlier this month, police launched a zero-tolerance crackdown on graffiti taggers who are causing hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage across the North East.

Metro operator Nexus already pays ?500,000 a year to remove graffiti from its network.

Police are also targeting two vandals who use the nicknames INCH and KNT and are causing damage across Tyneside.

Writing and Your Health
? 1997 Sehmuel (mailto:sam@graffiti.org)
Taken from Art Crimes (http://www.graffiti.org/).

I'd spent a whole day on a fairly large production. I had this brilliant sensation of a burning throat, chest and stomach. I felt dizzy and sick. This is when I finally realized paint fumes were really starting to get to me.

Anyone who has ever done a piece should know afterwards, the colour of your main fill-in, reappears when you blow your nose. If you're saying "yuk.. I don't look at my snot", - let me put it to you another way. Ever painted indoors? If you have, you'll know what I mean by "spray mist". Spray cans let the paint out, and most of that paint lands on your train, wall or whatever, but the gas drifts on outwards.. until it settles. When you're painting, your lungs take in this mist, the inside of your lips and nose absorb it. (Ever seen anyone sniff cocaine?) Paint-toxins can even be absorbed through your skin. (Read anything on aromatherapy baths etc.) Now with this knowledge, think about the ground underneath your piece.. did it ever have a taint of your main colours? A cover of fine, sticky, dusty pigment? Now think about that in your body... Now buy (or rack*) yourself a mask, pronto.

What Mask?

A decent mask should cover your nose and mouth. It should have at least two filters. The outside filter is called a "dust filter", and usually consists of filt, or a paper based filter, in plastic casing. The outside filter stops you inhaling the dusty particles of paint mist. The inside filter is a "gas filter", and usually consists of a coal-based substance, in a metal casing. This is the filter that stops the gas/fumes - which you may not notice as easily as the "paint dust" - yet this is the most hazardous aspect of using aerosols.

Both filters should fit in, or screw into your mask. Masks themselves are generally made of latex, plastic or rubber, and should strap on tightly enough to stop you inhaling any other way than through the filters. There is usually a simple valve on the mask itself - which allows you to exhale.

Filters will continuously "clean" air if they are left in an open space. So when your mask is not in use, keep it in a clean airtight container. (Your mothers tupperware will do ;-)

If you ever smell or taste paint through the mask, it's time to change filters. Generally - depending on how much you paint - changing once a year is advisable.

There are other, cheaper forms of masks, but these usually only stop dust/mist.. they're meant for sawdust.. not toxic fumes... by all means they're better than nothing - but not good enough.

Furthermore

Before and after you paint, make sure you eat and drink (preferably water). This should make your body less absorbent to the paint's toxins. Never clean your spray can tips by blowing through them, (this will invariably cover your lips in paint), do it as it says on the can, hold upside down, and spray until only gas comes out.

In my case, I think I might of realized just in time. I'd never suffered from asthma before. Now, when I run to catch a train or whatever, I'll quite often end up wheezing and puffing badly.

The following extract is quoted from Upski's book "Bomb The Suburbs". If I haven't influenced you, hopefully this will:

MESSAGE TO MARIO: WEAR YOUR MASK
"We used to have a joke that spray paint was fucking up our memories. A few weeks ago, Mario called me with a new joke. When we were 13 and 14, we painted dozens of walls together, traded girls, fought gangbangers, battled other crews, and talked on the phone almost every day. For a while, Mario was my best friend. After we stopped hanging out, he got even deeper into painting. He painted with different partners every week, traded photos around the world, and filled his life with graffiti. Even the great Trixter had said he was a graffiti head.

We used to have a joke that spray paint was fucking up our memories. A few weeks ago, Mario called me with a new joke. "It wasn't the memory, it was the bladder," he said. "About a year ago I started noticing I had to use the washroom more often. Before I learned to control it, I would urinate in bed even. It kept getting worse. Now, I can't drink anything for two hours before I go to bed. I pee once before bed, then I have to get up again twice during the night"

The neurotoxins in spray paint have damaged the part of Mario's brain which produces hormones to control his bladder. The label on any spray can will tell you it can also damage the immune and nervous system, kidney, liver and lungs - the same is true for a lot of markers.

Anyone who's gone piecing has felt the slight dizziness, and loss of appetite. Some of us get headaches and nausea. I personally get muscle spasms and my hair is starting to go (one of four writers I know who're early balding). In the long run, who knows? Spray paint could be our Asbestos, our AIDS.

Coincidentally, I have a second friend named Mario. This Mario lives on the West Side, and he's at least as much of a graffiti head as the first Mario. He paints at least as much as the first Mario, and has at least as many problems. "All my life, I never used to pick my nose," he told me recently. "Then in 1988, I started having to pick my nose all the time, getting paint-colored snot, scratchy throat, wheezing. Then one time, I did this real big production and I coughed up blood. After that I lost my voice for like a week. Dude, I was scared. I didn't want anybody to know. The doctor told me don't spray paint no more. I kept doing it, and my symptoms kept getting worse. I stutter... I get a tightness in my eye, twitches in my wrist... Dude, I get major, major headaches... The worst part is, I feel like I'm getting stupider; I can't articulate myself as well as I used to be able to... I think I'm addicted to doing graffiti, I fiend for it. Graffiti is my life. I feel like I might have to die for it."

I have to admit, death by graffiti sounds like an honorable way to go out. I dream of it myself. But isn't that giving up at the game, copping out at the challenge of life: the challenge to be stronger, smarter, healthier, better than we thought we could be. The challenge to survive.

Mario, I don't want to visit you in the hospital or at the cemetery, and I don't want you to visit me there. Sometime in life, I too may have to cough up blood, lose my hair, or to lose my mind because of the painting I've done. But I ain't going out like no sucker.

When I use spray paint, I do everything to dilute the toxins and keep them out of my body. I eat before and after painting, use the wind to avoid inhaling fumes, steer clear of other toxins, refuse to paint indoors, and refuse to go out unless I really care about the piece. Most of all, I wear gloves and a mask, changing the filters regularly. I'm wearing that fucker right now. Please wear your mask too, Mario. Both of you. that shit ain't funny no more."

Taken from "Bomb The Suburbs (http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-44-5)- revised second edition", by William Upski Wimsatt, published by The Subway And Elevated Press Company. 1994. ISBN:0-964-38550-3. The book costs about $8, and can be ordered from: Softskull Press (http://www.softskull.com/). While you're there, get Upski's No More Prisons (http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-42-5), which is one of the most inspiring books you'll ever read. Read the first 4 chapters online there.

More tips thanks to geargirl:
Drink milk before and after [we're not sure, but we think it might help restore your Ph balance]. Wear eye protection if you can, especially when working indoors, because professional spray painters sometimes suffer permanent eye damage. Also, if your back hurts, it could be kidneys that are overworked processing toxins. [Drink lots of water before, during, and after painting, to help them out.]

THE DEATH SQUAD
TDS was one of the most significant and influential style crews graffiti has ever seen. Their work was mainly seen on the Broadway number 1 line and the 2 and 5 lines. The peak TDS years were late '70s to early '80s. Unfortunately most of the major books and publications overlooked the significance of TDS. The fact that TDS was neglected is quite ironic considering the fact that some of the biggest names in writing were affiliated with it. Hard core members being MR. JINX 174, PART 1, KOOL 131, CHAIN 3, NOC 167, PADRE, PESO, BEAR 167. Other writers to put it up were NIKE, KF 174, MOON 77, REPEL, DONDI, BAN2, FUZZ 1,EZO FLITE, A ONE, SKEME, SLAVE, CASE 2, TEAN 5, KADE 198, MAGOO, ZEPHYR, DAZE, DEZ, JOEY, TOXIC (USA), SCORCH 170, DELTA 2, TORCH and COSE.

THE DEATH SQUAD

TDS was a crew concerned more with style rather than bombing. (Despite that fact they bombed anyway.) Their style contributions to the culture are significant and have been somewhat overlooked as is the case with many style masters. This is due to three factors. One, the natural abstractions of wild style make names illegible to the uneducated eye, therefore the media and general public can not determine the origin of the work. The second factor being style masters generally write many different names to demonstrate their ability to create a broad range of letter forms. It can be difficult for the writing community to keep up with all the names. The final being, style masters give outlines to other writers, many of which take credit for the style master's work.

Inch, a TRUE legend up here in the north east, used to have Newcastle by the balls at the time. I can remember at the time i was like 10-11, something like that anyway. I used to love going on the metros counting all of the inch daubs and peices, fresh as anything.

These are just my thoughts on Spanish and Parisian graffiti compared to Melbourne and the suburbs. Around Melbourne the tags themselves aren't that great overall, but people tend to focus more on getting it in interesting/hard to reach places. The stuff along the RER lines in Paris is awesome, and everywhere. There's a lot more variety in people's tags, and they're much more creative on the whole. Madrid is good, but not as good as Paris. In the place I'm currently staying, which is in a small conservative valencian town, graffiti is painted terribly, but it's all anti-nazism and pro-anarchy stuff, which is still a step up grom the 'Johno waz here' shit we get around Melbourne mostly.

I thought Melbourne had some of the best graffing in Aus. In Sydney there's a lot of taggers, less piece or throwie painters. I like the idea of doing graffiti in unusual/hard to reach spots, I practise parkour and this opens up a large amount of opportunities to reach such spots. :D

good type on the mask tho.. Swim recalls coming home from a night of bombing and coughing up blue Krylon cuz he only used a bandana to cover his face. Swim doesn't take good care of his lungs.

There's a lot of good stuff, but the overall quality in Europe seems to be better than in Melbourne.

Also, I've never been to another AUstralian capital city long enough to pay attention to the Graffiti, so I dont know if Melbourne is the best or not.

Pretty much where ever I go I look out or just notice graffiti. I know Germany has some good graff crews around, I think 1up is one in Germany?

I hate banksy hes a sell out. Every 14 year old kid that can cut out a shitty stencil is on his dick, he is the new OBEY on so many levels. Next time i go to the NYC ill grab some flicks and ill try to find my old black book and stencils to get some pics ups.

Anyone been in any crews. I was in STD smack toys down, BMW bombers most wanted, and WR Wreckless Writers.

Also if you want to see some raw street bombing watch State Your Name.
