i was thinking about moving to the city of amsterdam. i was planning to stay there til i'm about 21. i was planning to do some schooling if posible too.
i know theres a language barrier issue that for me can easily be resolved. its getting into the country and being alowd to stay there legally for awhile.. thats the key issue for me.
what other things would i need to take into consideration.

Been a criminal is fine I guess but a conviction for the said crime is not. It will hinder your visa application and could result in your not been able to enter depending on the conviction

The typical kid who thinks Amsterdam's where the shits at. Yeah, it's awesome but the novelty of decriminalised Cannabis will wear off in no time, as will the clubs and vice of the city.
Trust me. I've been to Amsterdam (Very briefly.) and associates of mine have lived there. It's not this fantastic place people seem to think it is.
Do you speak Dutch? Yea, alot of Dutch people speak fluent English but there aren't many signs in English there either.

Hemp Bio-Fuel, per chance?
yeah actually. the hemp my freinds are growin has little to no THC in it. it there is THC you need to burn a fucking feild to get a mild high.
acording to them they have a fuel that they can run any 2 stroke chainsaw or motorcycle engine on. they have not tried bigger yet.

But is that something you want to do? Really want to do? Sure, you're working with hemp and helping a friend, living a broad, etc, but to be a research scientist? Better be sure you're going for the right reasons.
Th0r's right about Amsterdam. Amsterdam is hardly representative of the Netherlands.
(Dutch babes are great though...)

As far as the language goes, if you sign up at http://www.livemocha.com you can enroll in free language courses. It's infinitely better than rosetta stone and has some extras that you can pay for, if you want to invest in this, but you'll be amazed at how extensive the free courses are.

There's a thing known as a plane, should help you get out of the country just fine. ;)
In all seriousness this link below should provide you with a lot of information and assistance if you are actually thinking about doing this properly.

Student visa?
In canada you can stay for 6 or12 months, no questions asked for 6-12 months. This of course only works if you've never been convicted of a violent or serious crime. Then once the visa is over you can re-apply for a visa for the next year of education or you can stay in a work-term type deal. Holland should have something like that. My sister went there. She said the whole legality of drugs is only interesting for a week or so. Then you realize that its nothing really special past the obvious few things.

Birth certificate stamped and verified as real in your embassy before you go, and needs to be verified no later than 90 days before you departure , you will need a “letter” from your local police station saying that you have never been convicted of any serious crime and that to stamped and verified. Once in the country you need to get all documents translated into local language by a translator of the embassies choice and then that to stamped and verified.
And all that is just the start.
Have fun.

If you didn't know already Holland is a very flat country. Bikes can be utilised as well as public transport. As for cities you can walk or just use public transport.
If it were me I'd rent a car if I genuinely needed one.
You'll need a driving licence in the states, BTW.

Many countries will recognize US drivers licenses, though I'm not sure if that's the case for the Netherlands. Try googling specific stuff like that.

I've been abroad and rented cars and the people I've had who had licences in the UK always got accepted.

I've rented in the Netherlands. You only need a US license. Actually, everywhere I went that's all I needed. The only problem I have had was going into Hungary. Funny how Serbia let me in and out just fine.
Anyway, Th0r is right. You definitely don't want to drive around in Amsterdam. There really is no need to, and it's crazy expensive. Rent a car if you need to drive far, or just get a bike. The Netherlands have a great rail network too.
