Anyone out there want to play some RTS games over Hamachi?

I'd be interested in playing the following, in order of preference:

* Total Annihilation
* Rise of Nations
* Age of Kings

If you suggest an RTS, odds are I would be up for a game as long as it's not one of the Warcraft games, or Starcraft. I'd even go as far back as Command and Conquer I if anyone is interested in that, or possibly C&C Generals.

Also, anyone have Arma II?

Hamachi?

I really enjoy Age of Empires 2. I have 3, but never used it much. Empire Earth is cool too.

I tried WIC and it didn't grab me.

Hamachi is a strange little free application that is basically a VPN for gaming purposes. You run the app, then you can connect over their servers like you're on a LAN with the other people you're playing with.

AOK2 is probably my favorite game ever though I haven't played in years.

I urge people here to try Total Annihilation. It is one of the two deepest strategy games I've ever played, the other one being Age of Kings (also rise of Nations).

It's available through... the usual channels... and the company that made it went under after their next game so it's basically abandonware.

The guy who wrote it went on to make Supreme Commander. But most people who have played both agree that TA is superior-- SupComm devolves too fast into a shit-flinging fest.

It's a little over a gig if I remember right. Well worth it though. Typically it's well seeded too.

And does it eat bandwidth like a motherfucker when you're playing multiplayer?

Not so much since it was designed for 56k and worked surprisingly well over modems. I'm pretty sure it sends mouseclicks only and is synchronous and deterministic.

It's not a scissors-rock-paper game like Starcraft. Unit balancing is much more like the way things work in modern maneuver warfare. Powerful air units, tier II units that devastate massive numbers of tier I. Many, many strategies are possible. The maps tend not to be fortress maps like SC's Lost Temple, and numerous resource locations providing relatively small (but permanent) resource income mean that ground control is of paramount importance.

I can see a lot of people not liking it. I think it probably takes some getting used to, especially in this day and age where the graphics are tired (but it does do 3D unit rendering fully in software, and runs smoking fast on modern machines...)

It also has artillery that pack a hell of a wallop and have vast range.

Oh, and it has actual radar towers, with actual ranges. And radar jamming units. And mobile radars.

You guys ever play the Total War series?
