This is my chest, I've had this rash as long as i can remember, saw a doctor a few years back, he prescribed cream that they stopped making 8 years prior... anyone know what it is and, how to get rid of it?

What is the behavior of that rash? Does it expand or change or anything like that?

Skin rashes are something that is very difficult to diagnose by just looking at them. A number of them can look exactly the same. If it shifts around, it could very well be a fungus, in which case lamisil creme would fix it. You could try lamisil for 2 weeks on one area and see if that area clears up. It does rather look like a fungus but it's kind of hard to tell...

It get's darker sometimes if it's hot, like in the summer... it's slowly expanding, used to be just my stomach, now it's send little dot troops to my forearms...

I'll look into Lamisil

Yeah, my guess is tinea versicolor, a skin fungus. You wanna get it taken care of ASAP.

Can it do anything bad in the long term? Or is it just one of the annoyances?

iceniner

Skin funguses are nasty, can be very hard to get rid of. You don't want this shit to spread to your scalp or face. It can also produce a very unpleasant suppurating sore that can take literally over a month to heal, and that's with treatment.

Oh, and oral terbinafine (lamisil) causes liver damage.

I'd even go so far as to say you should probably see a doctor about that, it's over a fairly large area and if it's spreading you've got a huge problem.

My itching? It just happens when I look at stuff like this...

No, I was talking to acid.

I'm curious what the previous doctor prescribed. A surprising number of medical professionals have their heads up their asses. It's really astonishing how many horribly bad diagnoses there are. Part of it is that they just don't care.

Acid44

I have no idea what he prescribed anymore... It was like 6 years ago... But when we went to pick it up the pharmacist was like "Uhh... they stopped making this 8 years ago... It was recalled."

I'll probably go see a doctor sometime this week... Thanks man

You should also ask for a bloodwork to be done. Sometimes skin ailments are caused by multiple things working together to fuck over a biological system. Like anemia = too much of a certain mineral = skin discoloration. Normally the overdose of minerals wouldnt do anything, but if you allready have lower than normal skin pigmentation, and your liver isnt working at max efficiency, you will have the rare and coincidental symptoms.

Also, you might have other problems completely unrealted that you should be checked for =)

I had some major medical problems last year so I had a shit ton of blood work done already

Thanks though

Sorry, I forgot this place is full of doctors qualified to diagnose you over the internet.

In a bad mood?

I don't see what's so bad about asking for an opinion during the weekend since I have to wait to see a doctor...

In a bad mood?

No. I call people out or challenge views when I see the need. If people ask stupid questions, I'm going to be honest about it. Sorry, that's just me. I refuse to live in a world where everyone has to agree or else it's called moodiness, negativity, fighting, etc. while it's just friendly candor. You're asking a medical question over the internet (on a board like Rorta). It's like me performing brain surgery in Japan via thought.

I expect the same treatment.

Acid44

The way I see it, I have to wait till at least tomorrow to go to the doc, so why not ask random internet folk? What harm could it possibly do?

odin_dax
17th February 2010, 03:31 AM
No harm, but no use either.

iceniner

What the doctor is most likely to tell him is that it's tinea versicolor. It's pretty much a textbook case.

Dermatologists have roughly five to ten different ointments and cremes that they can prescribe. It's a surprisingly inexact science. With fungi, at least they have the ability to perform a skin culture and stain, but in many cases they won't even do that.

They'd look at it and say "tinea versicolor."

No harm, but no use either.

If intelligent people offering sound advice is of "no use", then how useful are your posts bitching about your opinion of this topic?

It's already been suggested that he see a doctor. There is no harm in allowing people to throw ideas around. Additionally, who the hell are you to challenge peoples' medical credentials? It doesn't always require a doctor to make a basic diagnosis, even if it's a good idea to have one confirm it.

I expect the same treatment

And you'll get it. You seem to have made a habit of chiming in with glib, sardonic statements that attack peoples' intelligence and/or post quality. The irony is that these posts are just that; glib, vacuous statements that contribute nothing. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're just having a crappy day.

What the doctor is most likely to tell him is that it's tinea versicolor. It's pretty much a textbook case.

I am inclined to agree with you based on the location and pattern of the rash. Still, Acid, see a doctor!

He's right though that asking about medical problems on the net is a recipe for disaster. Typically my answer to this type of thing is 'go to a doctor."

I'm kind of interested now if it really is versicolor.

It sounds like Acid will be following your advice. So again, I don't see the harm in throwing down educated and insightful bets on a skin condition. It's not as if you're on here telling the OP how to surgically remove a sarcoma with a Swiss Army knife.

I just have a problem with attacks that add nothing to the discussion. Odin has his opinion, I have mine.

You're really sensitive if you think I was "attacking" him. I think I made my reasons clear, and I think they're valid. I made no personal attacks, unlike you. I think you missed the objectivity of my posts. Please re-read. What exactly did I say that was so offensive?

I didn't make any claim of intelligence for you or the posters responding to him. Intelligence has nothing to do with knowledge or expertise.

Glib? Vacuous? Do you even know what those words mean? That's the pot calling the kettle black in this situation, that's for sure.

I'll give you sardonic, depending on how you interpret my statements. I've been around here a long time. If people don't know my motivation or understand my style, then I really don't care if you think I'm having a bad day or not. There's nothing new here.

Maybe you're having a rough day, I don't know. You added nothing to this thread just by restating everything already mentioned, but you did manage to make personal attacks. Did you chime in just to be an ass? Or finally get some shots in on me? Don't be mad because I called you out on that.

You're right I have an opinion. I responded to his responses. I used sarcasm because that's a useful device. People respond to it, people listen to it. Kill me.

I was honest and candid. Shoot me.

Definitely. But I'll admit my pride demands at least one response to such posts. :grouphug:

You called the topic stupid, just as you did with my topic about license to carry before the board got hacked. You seem to do that a lot. I fail to grasp why you don't just ignore topics you find lacking in substance. If something false is posted and you want to clarify information, that's fine. To post for the sheer purpose of calling something stupid is the epitome of irony.

Glib? Vacuous? Do you even know what those words mean? That's the pot calling the kettle black in this situation, that's for sure.

I have a pretty good idea, as I was able to formulate a post articulating my ideas without sticking to one-line responses.

Did you chime in just to be an ass? Or finally get some shots in on me? Don't be mad because I called you out on that.

No, I chimed in because I thought you were being an ass and derailing an otherwise legitimate medical discussion. Your analogy of performing "thought surgery" on someone in Japan was a gross hyperbole of the situation. Again, we're throwing around ideas here. Most people have recommended that the OP see an MD and it's just a fun betting game at this point.

iceniner

If he's had it as long as he can remember it's possible that it could even be some sort of vitiligo or something like that.

lcnostra
18th February 2010, 03:36 AM
He did say it's been slowly expanding, so it's a possibility. Seems odd that the MD he saw years ago didn't diagnose it as such, though.

lcnostra

I would like to apologize as well. Can we all agree that most topics aren't "stupid" and that they are primarily made stupid by OT arguments? I will take the fall for that one, though I was trying to encourage a continuation of the discussion.

*** There are some topics that are inherently stupid, don't get me wrong. I just didn't feel like this was one of them.

... >_>

Thanks Thief and, Icnostra...

I'm still planning to go to the doctor, however we just had a nasty wet snowfall so I don't know when it will happen... hopefully soon, but I have no intentions of going out in this weather to combat something that, to this point, has done me no harm...
