Apparently not many people know about the new Rorta chat, despite the fact I talked about it in another thread so take this as the official announcement.
The Rorta Chat can be accessed by going to the Rorta Chat Group and following the instructions.
http://forum.rorta.net/group.php?groupid=6
Now what are the plans for this chat feature and why do we need it?
The IRC server was at times awesome. We had some awesome conversations there until it became desolate and therefore CBC was obliged to take it down.
This chat server can be accessed by IRC and via Browser, which is pretty cool. I'll expand on that in a second.
One of the plans is for a massive synchronised chat, like we had with A0tu and also on the IRC. This basically means we all log on at one designated time and talk about whatever.
There are several rules.
No spamming whatsoever. Anyone spamming will be instantly banned and face the possibility of their forum account also being banned.
No advertising or attempting to sell anything. Again this warrants an instant ban. DoctaD, Torcher and myself are all moderators there and all have the power to ban.
No discussion of illegal activities which would draw heat. For instance things such as Child Porn are completely out of bounds.
At the moment that's all there is on the rules front.
Like I said, the chat can be accessed via IRC. Instead of using programmes like MIRC which cost money, download Pidgin, which is free and awesome if you haven't got it already.
Then grab the OTR or Off The Record plugin. Install it and use it to encrypt your conversations.
Details of how to access the channel via IRC will be posted shortly on the group.
Any questions?

The Rorta chat session is a great success.
We've discussed, well a lot - From Torchers ability in the art of fellatio to more serious matters like HD destruction and scamming Microsoft.

First and foremost I'd like to thank everyone who attended the Rorta chat session last night.
Massive shout out to Torcher, Acid44, Jinx, Thief, Creeper, DoctaD, Darkangel, Beyond and DIzzIE. If I forgot you it might have been because I logged off at about 2:30AM GMT and DIzzIE hadn't logged on, providing it was in fact DIzzIE.
I'd like to repeat the massive chat's every weekend if that's possible. If you want to do it on a Friday night that's cool too.
So what did we discuss...
Hard drive destruction and an element of networking.
We discussed within that Degaussers, 'high power' Magnets as well as where to buy them and software that will do the job of the magnets.
We concluded that for Average Joe software would suffice.
Getting free shit from numerous companies such as Microsoft.
Acid44 is going to test whether he can get a free keyboard courtesy of Logitech using the common serial number scam.
I also offered a few freebies, too.
Like I said, thanks Rorta.
Oh, and a new rule.
No sharing of another members personal information on the chat. If you get caught doing this we will take action to ban you from the chat server.

'twas an epic chat, all except my bother in law >_< (sorry dudes, shouldn't happen again though)
Another rule
Use of another member's user name is ban hammer material, and will result in your castration by means of torches teeth.

It's not buggy but merely a flash chat application based on IRC.
It's probably a problem at your end.

possibly... but i haven't had any other problems with any flash apps...

So what's the status of this channel? Abandoned again or have I just been showing up at bad times to catch anyone?
Th0r

For the mean time no one's using it, but I'm working on new chat software.

What's wrong with hosting it on an IRC network like the old channel was? Pick a network that provides an aplplet for people who don't want to download an irc client or run CGI:IRC to set up you own...
Th0r

What I'm working on is getting an IRC up with a web interface that can be connected to via Pidgin or another client such as MIRC.

For the peoples here with an iPhone or iPod touch you could start a Rorta chat group on palringo

Just in case nobody has thought of it: why not just start a channel on some public IRC server like Coldfront?
There are irc clients that encrypt at a client-to-client level.
Th0r
25th June 2010, 08:40 AM
I investigated it but I thought doing it this way would be easier. Whatever. I'll re-investigate it.

Better in some ways, maybe yes. Easier no. Sign on to coldfront and type "/join #rorta" and that's all that's required. P2P encrypted chat would work no matter who hosted the server.
There are numerous back doors in IRC server daemons. It's said that they all have them.

Yeah, IRC isn't the most secure protocol out there by any means.

It's not even so much that, though it certainly isn't, but there are backdoors in the daemons that allow people to actually root your server.
Ever ask yourself who really runs EFNET? I won't use IRC anymore.

Me too!, I've been backdoored!

There's other networks besides efnet and if someone has a stable linux machine and a fairly beefy connection they could run their own irc daemon
