I'm thinking about buying a ski pole for use as a spear in spear fishing... I think I could "shoot" it like a pool cue due to it being smooth, straight, and light, resulting in much improved accuracy over a stick... anyone done anything like this?

wouldnt u have to put some sort of extra weight at the spearhead weahther u make one ore something so it impales and flies true to the mark.

You don't actually throw the spear from your grasp. It's more like stabbing fish with a knife on a stick.

oh ok than. u would have to adjust the "spearhead" so it was sharp and maybe have it spiked so when u get one it wont slid off unless u take a landing net.

if you are going to use a ski pole, then get an arrowhead as well. by arrowhead i mean the spring loaded type used in deer hunting and fish shooting ( some people fish with compound bows and the like) that cuts through flesh and then opens up so that it can't slide back out the direction from which it came. they're like 8$ for 6 arrowheads @ wal-mart i believe.

I take it you have never been spearfishing before...
Good luck hitting a fish with a knife on a pole. Get yourself an hawian Sling, they cost like 15 bucks here in aus, and you wont lose the fish either.
Think of it as a pole with a giant rubber band on it.
And yes, i spearfish the summer away ahhh life on the water for the win...

I've seen my grandpa do it with nothing but a stick.
Does sound like a good idea though (the Hawaiian sling)... don't know if I'd have the patience to spend 59834 hours getting good enough to do it with a stick if it really is that difficult (yeah, never tried it... he just made it not look too incredibly hard).

Yeah anyone, ANYONE can catch a fish with a pole, but, will you eat that fish. no way.
As a rule, anything that tastes nice moves fast, and dont bother with the slow movers...
serios you will get something everytime you go out when you know where the fish live and have some luck.
Start on some static Apena Tables, and take a mate.... This is a serious sport, that can very easily end in death and serious injuries, i have been 300m off shore and had to swim my dive mate in due to cramping in his legs, been on the reciving end of blackouts, and cramps.
But i love it and will only stop when i cant swim anymore.
