Assassin's Apprentice - the farseer trilogy book 1
A book written in a parralel, mediaeval-centred world of superstition and heirarchy, about a boy, whose identity as a royal bastard forms the basis of the story. 'Fitz' is sworn to protect his king from a young age, and is secretly trained by the king's assassin to work for the royal family. But he is soon to learn the cost involved in being used as a weapon of the kingdom, complete with deception and conflicting loyalties.
The blurb on the back reads: " Fitz, is a royal bastard, cast out into the world with only his magical link with animals for solace and companionship. But when Fitz is adopted into the royal household, he must give up his old ways and learn a new life: weaponry, scribing, courtly manners; and how to kill a man secretly. Meanwhile, raiders ravage the coasts leaving the people Forged and soulless. As Fitz grows towards manhood, he will have to face his first terrifying mission, a task that poses as much risk to himself as it does to his target : for Fitz is a threat to the throne... but he may also be the key to the future of the kingdom."
10/10
A bloody brilliant book. Moving, believable. I read the book and for the hours that I spent, nothing else existed outside of the world in the book.
Favourite character: Verity. For the strength of his character and assurance in his ability to rise above adversity.
