IRC is pretty damn cool, and Rorta should have at least a channel. Somewhere.
And then, when it gets popular, Rorta could get its own server! Woo! A channel for every different topic - Underground, General and Main! Woo!
And a channel for DCC-ing warez! Woo!
Do it.

Undernet may be a good place as a starting point for the channel.

I find it very hard to remember to run mIRC, but if I put it as a start-up item it drives me crazy and gets closed straight away.... if anyone wants to chat with me I have a few AIM accounts and MSN Messenger if you insist.

Ditto that. I mean, IRC is dandy and all, and the idea of this board having a 24/7 chat room is cool, but I just can't honestly say that I'd go. The whole reason I like these forums so much is that you can walk away from a discussion, think about what you're typing, and generally participate at your (read: my) own pace. Whenever I get the need to chat, I just sign on AIM and see who I can bother about. Back in the day, when WeirdPier had its own chat room, people would just enter for 5 minutes, remark how cool it was that we finally had a chat room all to ourselves, then go back to posting on the forums.
I'm not against a chat room [per se, I'm just saying I probably wouldn't wind up going.

I chat a lot, on msn and yahoo and all that crap, But I think a chat room in rorta is a bad idea, I mean Rorta is Rorta For a reason and i think thats becuase the posts "Which are usually thought over by whomever is posting them, Usually" Are actually good, they have charecter"Dont care if i spelt that right" and meaning and I actually enjoy reading everything. I think if we get a chat site people would get lazy and use that to express/vent themselves. So i'm gonna VOTE NO TO CHAT!!!!!! on that one.

Anyone who has been on IRC for any amount of Time knows
it's basicly just idiots idleing, and flaming people who hold
conversations.I remember in #2600 I was gonna fly to CA
and beat the fuck outta some Trendy Fuck, but I remembered
I havnt any cash or credit.
One of the Pro's of the Internet is that it allows people who bow
down in Physical Confrentation to talk shit without ending up in
a pool of there own blood with no wallet. If I could get my Hands
on those Dilberts in #2600 I would drag them out there front
door, Beat there Teeth out in front of there family, and Physically
drag them through the Yuppie Inhabited Suburb challenging there
neighbors to try and physically stop me.If you are a coward with
no self respect, and live by others ethics, then you have no right
insulting people who dont act like Mutt's with there Tails between
there legs when yelled at or pushed.

A rorta chatroom is an alright idea, but it would have to be well thought out.
it would have to be a twice a week kinda thing instead of an all the time kinda thing. it would have to have a time period set. and finally it wouldnt be too greart unless the majority of members here went there at the same time. we had one for roguesci.org, but there were also hundreds of members. most of the members didnt show up for long, and we all talked at the same time of day and only for a slightly pre-determined amount of time so that it wouldnt get highly annoying. Hell, myself and orion also made an "experi-mental script" kinda thing with its own custom commands and slaps and shit.
long story short... its an alright idea, but it'd have to be gone about in a careful way, and rules would have to be set so that things didnt get out of hand. most people here aren't up to it

I don't see the point for it at the moment, there's not enough members. When the site grows though, it's very possible.

I bet Stone and DD are going to make some kind of file sharing forum.
But IRC. IRC is cool. It's not just a chat room - it's INTERNET RELAY CHAT!
As for this whole "oh a chat room will lower the quality of posts here," I say to you, shut up. Debates and discussions on forums are nothing like debates and discussions in chatrooms IRC. IRC sharpens the wit, because you have to reply quickly, since it is supposed to be real-time.
On a forum, however, you have all the time you want to research your argument, find facts and proof, etc etc. Obviously that leads to more intelligent debates and discussions, but it's not the same.
If you all weren't so immature you wouldn't fuck it up.

The master of maturity speaks...
The large majority of us use some kinda Instant Messaging client and most, if not all, of these support multiple user chats.

blaksun, tsk tsk tsk. everyone here probably has MSN or AOL Instant Messenger. The IRC would NEVER get used and if it did there would only be like 2 people in there at a time.

Hmm... hadn't thought of a file sharing IRC room before...
But then, I don't know if it's such a good idea since someone *glares at Stone* won't tell us if IRC is gonna implode tomorrow or what.

Kelly, I said nothing about a file sharing forum... Maybe there will be sometime, but what I was hinting at is alot better than that.
ADN, rest assured that nothing is going to happen to IRC... Maybe I was exaggerating a bit in my hint, but there may be another alternative for certain members of Rorta in the coming months.

Plenty of mac users on IRC today. ircle is one mac client I know of; there are others.

not sure why this got a bump...but...I use colloquy on mac. an irc channel for rorta? I love irc, it's the only IM I have used for at least 5 years now, but I fail to see why this would be a good idea...at least at the moment.
Though as an IRC whore, I'm all for the idea.

IRC exposes your IP to anyone who cares to look, unless you are IRCing from a colo.

That's why we'd restrict access to the IRC Channel. We control who goes in and who goes out.

Speaking as someone who used IRC since the first server went up, it's not something I will use anymore because of the high availability of exploits.
IMO you are better off using some sort of server-based group chat similar what Gmail chat will do, where peoples' IP addresses are obscured.

Well don't be its the Dutch equivalent of a credit check according to a quick web search.
Lenen zonder BKR toetsing = Loan with out BKR check(credit check) the rest of the post is just some monkey banning on a keyboard.
I highly doubt this poor no lifer is living anywhere near Canada.

I don't understand what kind of bot would target this site by splooging some sloppy phishing attempt in Dutch, of all languages.

Use a shell/BNC or somthing to IRC, its cheap or free and a shit load better than using your home connection.
To go on IRC I use a SSH tunnel to my VPS in Russia, then use IRSSI to chat...
Th0r
4th June 2011, 12:54 AM
Or just use some form on a proxy or VPN.
-=HeX=-
4th June 2011, 06:14 PM
True, a VPN works.
I was thinking of setting up OpenVPN on one of my servers and having it as a "Invite only anonymized proxy" but then for some reason decided to install MetaSploit on the server instead, adding browser-autopwn on port 8080 and posting it on a proxy list to see how many it got.
If I have a spare server soon I will consider making a VPN, but IRSSI via screen session is just as good IMO.
Hell, if anyone wants to GRE tunnel I have lists of Ciscos they can use.
