A few years ago, swim was released from prison. He had a number of new skills. One of these was the ability to fold a piece of paper into a knife. When he showed me this new skill, he stabbed a watermellon with it. I was quite impressed. Anyone know how to do that?

not by folding it no. on the other hand i know that if you get paper wet and rough up it's surfaces while it's wet and then put glue on it and roll it up extremely tightly, once it's dried out completely it might as well be a piece of wood. if you rolled it up to make a cone, and cut it off so one end's flat, while the other end is sharp, and tigltly glued more paper around the entire point to smooth it out and strengthen it you could puncture through some pretty hard stuff with it once it was dry.

First of all, inmates can do amazing things. They make booze and weapons out of nothing. Juat talk to a long timer. Second, who the hell are you to say whats impossible? :fuckyou: :damnit1:

Wrong. Gimmie a few different definitions of a knife.

what im saying is that you are not going to make a knife out of just paper, maybe if you add some other things, but not just paper. And if you say you can id like to hear how

I wouldn't be suprised if it is possible. Paper can be really sharp. If it's folded properly and became quite rigid then I'm sure you could do some damage with it. You can make knives out of practically anything. You can sharpen the side of a credit card by grinding it against stone and it becomes a lethal weapon that could slit your neck as easily as a razor.

Perhaps "knife " is the wrong word. Lets try weapon. Either way, it was made of paper and it stabbed a watermellon. It surely could have done severe dammage to a person.

I believe the word for the weapon would be "shiv" or "shank", While Ive never seen it done with just paper I have seen it done with cigarette butts, (melt them with a lighter than fuze them togather, then sharpen ).
But yea, its possible Im sure, just would need water/glue/something else, Unless your the supreme origami ninja hehe

Probably could use some kind of caramelized/burned sugar to stiffen paper like glue to some degree... something like that... (looking at what materials would be available in prison)

It might be possible, perhaps, if you soaked the paper, roughed it up, and let it dry out, as THErAPIST mentioned...then maybe...I dunno, melt one of the small disposable combs over it? Those combs by themselves aren't enough to make a shiv capable of penetrating a watermelon, but the toughened paper core could act as a support in the centre, while the melted plastic could be sharpened?
Just a thought. Trying to think of meltable substances you can gain access to in prison...but I'm not sure just plain paper could penetrate a watermelon rind without collapsing. Open to persuasion, though.
And at that rate...you're better off melting two combs together and taking it from there, just foregoing the paper...but what do I know, I've never been in prison.

I have seen a shank made up of rolled up magazine and sharpened to a point. It would really mess you up, prolly kill you . Here is a sorry pic of one http://www21.flickr.com/photos/isotope/492829431/in/set-72157600201394087/
There was a whole episode of mythbusters on prison weapons as well.

I used to be full of asumptions when I was a kid, too. It's not too hard to dent a car, I know from experience.

I know it's really easy to dent a car. But a rolled up magazine?

I was kicking a football around earlier and I caught the door panel with a rocket straight out of Michael Essien's top drawer. I made shit of the paintwork but no dent. There would have to be a trick to it and in that case, whats the point?

Many cars these days are made from a type of fibreglass, they don't dent easy but will crack instead. Unless you are a have a lot of money to burn and go for carbon fibre...

Yeah, my old saturn was hit by a drunk guy, while parked outside my house. Any other car would have just had a big dent from it (he wasn't going to fast, just had no coordination), but my car's entire side panel exploded. The lesson, Saturn's are made of that fibreglass.

My brother and I beat the shit out of an old Nissan Sunny one day, for shits and giggles. We dented every panel, using nothing but our fists, knees and feet. It wasn't a hard task.

Which would you prefer to be hit by though, a fist or a newspaper?
I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think it has more to do with the car then the newspaper.

You're right, I could easily dent a car with a punch. The average car really can't handle that. But if I slapped a car, the same way the force of a magazine hit it, it would probably take a LOT more effort to leave a mark.

Pretty much irrelevant, but I've always found paper folding limits interesting....
Three folds - Finger nail thickness
Seven folds - Thickness of a notebook
Ten folds - Width of a hand
Twelve folds - Height of a stool
Fourteen folds - Average height of a person
Seventeen folds - Height of a two story house
Twenty folds - A quarter of the sears tower
Twenty five folds - Taller than the matterhorn
Thirty folds - Outer limits of the atmosphere
Fifty folds - Distance to the sun
Sixty folds - Size of our solar system
Eighty five folds - Diameter of our galaxy
One hundred folds - Size of the known universe

ok...for all those wondering if you can or can't dent a car with a rolled up newspaper/magazine...yes you can. absolutely 100%, so long as it is rolled up tight, and the car is metal. unless you aren't strong...but...it doesn't take a whole lot of force...
and esophagus...you liken it to a slap...you've obviously never been hit with one then...you'll find that rolled up newspaper becomes quite rigid and solid.

So does getting slapped hard enough. I tohught the problem would be the way it was hit. If you smash your fist into a car, it'll leave a dent, if you give it an open handed slap of equal force, its an entirely different motion, and may not dent.

You know you can't fold paper in half more then 8 times? Or something like that...

been watching a lot of prison shows lately, and ive seen where they take newspapers and roll them tightly with a razor in the end or some sharpened object to make a shank. and i have also seen the "paper bat". pretty badass if you ask me.

Maybe if you jabbed a really tightly folded newspaper at a car it would dent, but I didn't think a smack with it would inflict the same damage. I get the feeling I'm wrong though.

Where I used to live, we had fields full of scrap cars... I'm about 30 miles from there now, and not on the road. I would have quite happily carried out some research, seeing as it's scientific and all.

Remember when this had to do with folding a piece of paper into a knife?... Anyway, did you see him make it? If so, was it from a single piece of 8 1/2 x 11 paper? Was it computer paper or thicker/thinner stock? I would really like to experiment with this idea out of curiosity. From a search the only paper knife I found was a throwing knife that included a pencil and duct tape (so pretty much useless)

honestly shanks can be made from just about everything. but I've never heard of a paper shank, when you find out how to make it post pics and a guide. We all want to know how to make shanks from paper.:deal:

Dont have no pics on that now but you wet the toilet paper fold it, let it dry. Wrap more paper around it, wet it let it dry.......continue this process over and over. It will dry hard like paper machae. My favorite is out of plexi-glass mirrors, goes through metal detectors and can be sharpened for either take, a slice or chop his ass up.
