Another paranoid look at communism from "the good liberal guys", it's so old and so stereotyped it's not even fun.

Romero is a noob. All storylines are perfectly equal, with slight changes from movie to movie (one time it's a virus, next time it's a crazy scientist, etc...) and script variations ("oh noes he's gonna bite me" becomes "oh noes don't let him bite you" in the next). Not adding it's ALWAYS the same bullshit. WHAA DEAD TOOK THE WORLD BUT A SMALL TOWN REMAINS UNCONQUERED!... It's like Asterix instead romans are zombies...

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels - The best movie ever made in my opinion. Brilliant storyline, great camerawork and cinematography, believable characters, and a kick ass fucking soundrack!

Lord of the Rings - All three and they don't need explaining...

Heat - Some of the best acting ever seen in a film by some of the best actors ever to be in a film with some of the best script ever in a film with plenty of adrenaline rushing actoin spliced in.

Platoon - Classic war film. The best war film ever made I'd say.

We Were Soldiers - Not everybodys choice as the best war movie but I think it just hasn't been around long enough to be called a 'classic'. Beats the rest by miles except for the previously mentioned.

aionsan, as for What Dreams May Come It would probably be emo if I wasnt a chick, tesosterone bang bang movies just dont cut it for me all the time =p

Red Dawn is just awesome, it has kids shooting commies

And uhh, Im kinda out of it right now, but when did Romero have a crazy scientist that started the infection ?

A Clockwork Orange. I love absolutely everything about this movie, the scenery, the way the characters speak, the themes, but I especially love the way the music contrasts what's going on in the film (how can't you love a rape/assault scene played to "singin' in the rain"?)

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels was definatly awesome. What did you think of Full Metal Jacket ? My pops said it was one of the most realistic (at least for the bootcamp part) vietnam movies he's ever seen

A clockwork orange I liked, but I liked the book alot more

Resevoir Dogs- I thought the acting was pretty good, and the ear cut scene was great.

Full Metal Jacket- Lots of action and no matter how many times I watch that movie I cant stop laughing at Sgt. Hartmann.

The book was really good too, but I think I still prefer the movie because of all the visual cues and musical cointerpoints, despite the fact that the movie does end prematurely.

A Clockwork Orange is a masterpiece of cinema.

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels is a barracks favorite.

Platoon is pretty awesome.

Red Dawn is puerile if taken seriously, but still lots of fun to watch.

Resevoir Dogs is great.

I love all zombie movies.

Full Metal Jacket is pretty fuckin realistic about boot camp. And it's Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. Three chevrons up, two rockers down, crossed rifles in the center.

Oh yeah... Forgot about Full Metal Jacket! It was a spur of the moment list but Full Metal Jacket deserves to be in there. I love war movies, especially Vietnam movies. I like Apocalypse Now also, but the Redux version is just waaaay to drawn out.

Saw
I like the simple story line, the way the characters get there memorys back. I also like the point the killer is making.

When the killer gets up in the cell and tells the camera dude that the key was in the sink... was class, the look on his face was priceless.

Hostel
I liked the idea of it, though I think they could have done better. The real reason I like this film is again the idea of it, buying people just to torture them. Made me LOL when the guy went back for the chinese girl, riskin his life only for her to jump in front of the train at the end.

Battle Royal
I love this fucking movie, abit farfetched at times but it has a 'manhunt' type theme to it. The psycho jap plays a good part too.

The Godfather
Best gangster film made in my opinion, the actors are all great and the storyline rocks. Nothing beats the horses head in the guys bed neither.

Goodfellaz
I love the bit where Tommy shoots the cocky kid in the foot, then in the next scene where the kid tells Tommy to go fuck him self, Tommy puts a hollowpoint in his chest. Fucking classical.

I like a select few hollywood movies. Independent movies are great. There are some real winners. But the ones that stick most to my programmed mind are hollywood.

Resident Evil
The Bourne Identity (Matt Damon)
Black Hawk Down (The guy that gets left behind is a cracker. Same guy that has a speech impediment in Pearl Harbour. Yeh I like that one too! "J.. J-J-J....JJ-JAPS!"

Inside Man, because it proves without a doubt that Spike Lee is still one of the greatest and most intense directors in the US. I got a little worried after Summer of Sam and She Hate Me, but... DAMN am I ever glad to be wrong.

The fact that it's the best heist thriller ever made helps too. Seriously, get the fuck off the internet and watch Inside Man now.

Damnit, I love that film, those moments, those sayings and.
"Now I'm thinkin': it could mean you're the evil man. And I'm the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here, he's the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness."
Ive even incorporated some quotes to my role playing characters...

Oh hell, I forgot Oldboy! It has EVERYTHING. Comedy, action, drama, a twisted-to-fuck plot, and kickass actors whose emotion transcends the Korean/English language barrier.

Heat: The best movie hands down in agreement. It has a good plan to rob a bank except for you could see the gun barrels....

Truth and Consequences New Mexico: I love this movie because it was the first rated R movie I saw and it stays good in my mind.

The Departed: A very good movie that was fast paced and chnage direction multiple times.

AionSan, youre an asshole.

Wizard of Oz. Its jsut a classic. I love the entire series of books, theyre just so innocent. I think the movie actually managed to do them justice, which is prbably why I love it so much.
Empire Records. A spectacular cast, very hollywood, but it really didn't show in the movie. I absolutely love the entire plot. I used to dream of working at a record store, because of it.
Alice in Wonderland. Lewis Carroll is a genius. The movie does absolutely nothing for the book. Especially not the old Peter Sellers one. I just love to watch the movies/read the book and imagine everything thats happening in Wonderland. I don't mean Alice's adventures, I mean what else could be happening in such a vastly imaginative world.
Donnie Darko. Gary Jules was probably the highlight of the movie. Im not sure why I like it so much, its just great. Borderline horror, with some great twists.
Mirrormask. Neil Gaiman is a genius. The art was great in this movie, and did wonders for the absolutely gorgeous plot.
The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Such a great musician and artist. You'll appreciate him a million times more after watching this.
The Batman series is great. Batman Begins was the best so far. Next one looks even better.
George A. Romerooooo. Need I say more?
Plenty more.

edit: I caaaaaan't forget about Hard Rock Zombies. The best thing to come out of the 80's. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089254/

Went to Reno 911 tonight. My pops got angry at me for my poor choice in cinema, but it was $1 at the Budget and really worth it. Not going to get the DVD but seriously, go see it while it's cheap. Better than the show.

Most of mine have already been mentioned so I'll steer clear of all those. Although there are only two quotes I've learned from film's; Jules' Ezekiel 25:17 and Singin' in the Rain.

- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
The drug movie. Jonny Depp shaved his head for the Hunter S. Thompson look. Kinda loses its way a bit towards the end but still class.

- Requiem For a Dream
The other end of the spectrum. Much darker then FALILV. Quality score too. And Marlon Wayans!

- Donnie Darko Directors Cut --- so much thought was put into this movie, if your one who loves movies that make you think..... this is definitely for you. (btw, Directors cut has key info the normal version doesn't) I've spent countless hours just figuring the movie out. Gary Jules definitely made this movie awesome too.

- Fight Club --- movie was great, Loved every aspect. The theory behind the movie is one to think about. This is one of those life changing movies. A lot of good advice is in this one lol.

- Snatch --- for some reason I preferred this over Lock Stock and 2 Smokin barrels. It had a great story line and an awesome cast.

- Lock Stock'em Two Smoking Barrels --- Great all around movie, although it seemed there were too many similarities between this and snatch.

- Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man --- I had no idea what to expect watching this movie, and it blew me away. Very very very strange movie but another great thinking movie.

The big lebowski is one of the greatest movies of all time.

also: Leon (The Professional) Amazing action movie with a genuinely heartfelt plot. Natalie Portman puts on an amazing job of acting for her age at the time. And come on, it's one of Gary Oldman's best villians.

The Fifth Element: Coincidentally enough Gary Oldman is an awesome Baddie in this one too! But come on, hot model in a skimpy outift doing Jeet Kune Do and Kung Fu shit, Bruce willis being a general badass, and an awesome sci-fi concept. Cheeseball as fuck, yes, but so much fun.

"Are you classified as human?"
"Negative, I am a meat popsicle."

Teenage Mutant ninja Turtles: I don't care if it was meant for kids or not. I still think it's done the best job making the Turtles as dark as they were in the comics. Theres always going to be some toning down, but it was just dark enough to do them justice.

"A Jose Conseco bat? Tell me you didn't pay money for this!"

Fight Club. Like someone said earlier, a life changin movie. without question. Plus it has Brad pitt making fun of his own pretty boy status. Ed Norton and the Pitt need to do more shit together, becuase their brilliant. Not to mention the amazing director behind it all, David Fincher. Check out Se7en if yo don't believe he is awesome.

Ditto on Lock, Stock...I've seen that maybe 5 times and I'll probably see it 5 more times. I have nothing bad to say about that film. Or Snatch, for that matter. Not deep films, but, just the good stuff.

Ditto Lebowski as well. In my opinion, the funniest film ever made, and I've seen a lot of movies.

I would add:

Land and Freedom. Great movie about the Spanish Civil War. Ken Loach, who is kind of a hero of mine. This movie is like pornography to me. Political lust, though. Strong anti-fascist theme. A young member of Britain's Communist Party, goes to Spain to fight against fascism with the International Brigades. Storyline obviously inspired/shadows Orwell's excellent Homage to Catalonia.

Easy Rider. If you can get past the 60s stuff, I still think this is a poignant film about what freedom really means, and whether or not it is at all possible in the world. Depressing, dystopian ending.

The Indian Runner. Based on the Springsteen song "Highway Patrolman", this is about a cop with a brother who runs on the bad side of the law, and how he deals with the conflict between his job to uphold the law and his dedication to his family. David Morse, Viggo Mortensen. Sean Penn's directorial debut. This is about family, mainly, in a way that particularly interested me.

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. The best British film most Americans have never seen. Early Tom Courtenay, a juvenile delinquent who becomes the star runner for his Borstal, who struggles with the cost of "going straight" vs. his pride.

King Rat. More Courtenay, this takes place in a WW2 prison camp. It's about a British prisoner and an American one who is a slick "wheeler-dealer" type who cuts deals to stay alive. Great stuff if you like war/prison movies.

The Bridge on the River Kwai. One of the most riveting films of that time period. Pride vs. duty. Possibly Alec Guinness's greatest role (yeah, I know what you're thinking...)

The Butcher Boy. Nasty little Irish film. Nasty in a fantastic, hilarious, satisfying way. Sinead O'Connor as the virgin Mary! What the hell else do you need?

The Wind that Shakes the Barley. More Ken Loach. Irish Troubles drama. Saw this recently. I should just, basically, recommend every Ken Loach film because he's great. Some people will be turned off by the obvious leftish political sympathies but I fell in love with his films long before my political sympathies were anywhere near his.

Ghost in the Shell. I'm not an anime fan. But I *loved* this film. This is maybe the only anime I've ever seen that had a plot which fascinated me. Animation is fantastic. Arguably the best cyberpunk film ever made.

Two Lane Blacktop. Dennis Wilson (!) and James Taylor (!) as quiet loners on the drag racing strip race GTO-driving Warren Oates across the country in this quiet existentialist coda to the 60s.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. This is very nearly a perfect film. People call it weird, but I didn't think of it that way. Quietly amusing, existential, not deep, exactly, but clever. Focused. Modern urban samurai story about Forest Whittaker, an urban hermit of sorts, who acts in the capacity of a hitman for a mafia guy, living by the advice of the Hagakure, a handbook for Samurais. Lots of wry Jarmusch stuff in here. Funny, but strangely engrossing as well.

Mystery Train. Like Loach, I should just recommend all Jarmusch (someone else mentioned Dead Man). A variety of vignettes, some of which overlap, this all takes place in Memphis. One subplot involves a reckless, gun toting Joe Strummer (!) getting drunk with Steve Buscemi (!), shooting a liquor store clerk, and hiding out in a fleabag motel run by Screamin' Jay Hawkins (!!!). Not sure what else to say, frankly.

Well, that's just a few. I love movies.

Yeah, I liked Ghost Dog and The Bridge over the River Kwai as well. Easy Rider was good until one of the characters died (I won't give it away). The rest I haven't seen.

Anyone seen Rambo (2008)?

That movie is awesome.
Anyone else like big machine guns and flying bodyparts?

Yeah, I've seen it. I can't say I was totally impressed with it. What happened to the colonel??? It closed the book on the Rambo saga, but it was just like Rocky 12, doing it just to do it, to close out a series with a clear note. It was darker than the other Rambo movies, maybe because of the new director and cinematographer. In that regard, it was a lot better than its predecessors.

...it's a dark, twisted, visually stunning piece of film noir. Jack's best! While it's difficult to narrow the list down to one, Chinatown is certainly on the very, very short list. As for other [i.e. non-American cinema] movies: Breaker Morant, Seven Samurai...

PS: Did someone actually list Red Dawn?!

For a second there I thought you were calling Rambo a film noir.

Non-English movies? Did someone already mention City of God? Probably. That or La Haine.

City of God is a depiction of gang warfare amoungst the kids of the Rio ghettos. Quality film, and while I'm not sure how violent the place is in reality, the film certainly created an air of realism.

La Haine is actually an interesting contrast, following a day in the lives of three youths from the Paris banlieues. Artsy, in that it's shot in black and white, but given how most (all?) the film occurs at night it's adds to the gritty realism. One of those films where nothing much happens, but you get really invloved in the characters and the dialogue.

I seriously hope this guy's kidding...

He was. He probably has never seen the film and thought he would be really kewl if he posted it.

Anyone who has seen that film knows how terrible it is.

At times it is pretty funny though...

for me, hackers falls into the same category as lost boys...great for the one liners...which makes it a better movie than most. it's comedy...even if it's not meant to be...come on, you can feel the chant rising up inside you..."hack the gibson!"

besides, as a programmer, I have to laugh at movies that make shit like that...the command line is a gui!!!! hell, it's better than swordfish anyways...

I was looking for a list of good films for a while, but most of what I came up with featured a lot of oldies who features more due to their "classic" status than their quality. Maxim's 300 Movies To See Before You Die (http://www.maxim.com/The300moviesyoumustseebeforeyoudie/articles/1/22245.aspx) seems to be what I'm looking for though; broken up by genre rather than a straight list. Some good summaries too.

ya deffinatly going to have to say City of God is the best movie ever. film quality is a little shitty, but the overall story and way it shows the different charectors stories kicks ass

Film quality is over-rated. Too many films have terrible stories that look great.

People that don't like Gone With the Wind haven't experienced life, especially in the way love or adversity.

Resident Evil Extinction? Really?

Yer mate. At first i sort of didn't like it. Watched it again an shit from the other 2 movies were appearing. So i started it again and fucking loved it.

You really need to watch the first 2 movies to get the full impact of the 3rd. I had to explain some parts to mate while watching it again because he didn't understand.

Maybe that's it. It's been a while since I saw the forst one and I didn't see the second. Still; bad dialogue, bad acting, bad storyline, took ages to get going. Now I'll give time to any film with Mila Jovovich but she's only one woman (geddit?).
