Has anybody here played it? I think it's an enjoyable game, with lots of stuff to do that you normally wouldn't be able to do in another game. It prides itself on having so many possibilities on how your character develops, which is true looks-wise, but that's where it ends being so open. The game progression is so linear, no matter what path you take, your still going to be doing the same quests in the same area. Also, the map is extremely linear, a FFVII style world would have been so much better. The game is also way to short. Even with those disadvantages though, the gameplay makes up for it.

Fuck all console RPGs. Stone, if you want a REAL chance at character creation in a REAL RPG, buy Fallout and Fallout 2. Actually, since I haven't seen them on store shelves in a while, I don't know if it's possible to buy them anymore, so you'll probably be forced to steal it over Bittorrent (yeah, real pity I know). Your character has lived in an underground vault his/her whole life with a bunch of other refugees escaping the nuclear war that devastated the North American landmass in the 1950's. But things go awry, and someone is forced to go topside and get a piece of hardware to save everyone's lives. The world is pretty much an open book, and while there are flaws like the AI, and the (somewhat but not too generous) time limit, but it's a measure of how good the game is that I barely noticed the flaws my first few times through.

And if that isn't good enough for you, just remember that you can target individual body parts in combat. The first time you kneecap a raider TWICE, then walk up to him and apply a coup de grace with a rusty knife, you'll know why I love this game so much.

Not all console RPGs are bad. Many of them are quite entertaining, and have a very nice story to back it up.

Fable, while it is entertaining because of the style it was made in, lacked in gameplay time and the long story which RPGs are normally accustomed to. However, on the overall, Fable did not live up to what I thought it was going to be, nor did it live up to the hype that everyone created.

They may be entertaining, but they aren't RPGs. Play any of the Baldur's Gate games, or Planescape: Torment, and you'll see what I mean. The stat-crunching old school top-down just have an indescribable something in them that I felt was missing in many console RPGs. It might just be the placebo effect of being able to process massive amounts of data in the quest to create the perfect character, but it just feels bigger, better, and more alive than say, FFVII.

Which isn't to say that I didn't totally fall in love with FFVII myself. I remember playing that back in the day and being amazed by the level and scope of the action and the back-and-forth tension of the battles. But it ain't no RPG kiddo. It's an action game with experience points, a good story, and an inventory system. I realize that must sound like a stupid, nitpicky difference between the two, but believe me, play the classics and you'll see where I'm coming from.

Oh, I see where your coming from. Believe me. It just sounds like you're being too picky and seperating games of the same genre just for the sake of saying one is better. I appreciate games like Baldur's Gate very much, but I still have love for my console RPGs as well.

The simple fact is: I have a PC at home, an XBox in my girlfriends house...

Anyway, I have played fallout, and it is a classic.

From what I had read about Fable, it looked amazing, that's why I got it. I still think that the gameplay is enjoyable, but the game is just too short and the story is badly constructed. And, you can spend the whole game making ht emost evil character you can, and at the end you have to make a decision to be good or bad (retarded or what?) and that's not all! If you finish the game and make the bad choice, then you cleared it, but game over... If you make the good choice you get to play on and do whatever you want in Albion... RETARDED...

No, you got it backwards. If you make the good choice, the game ends. If you made the evil choice, you get to keep the sword and keep on playing once the credits end.

As for dissin' console RPGs, the only one I bother with (have) is FFX and it fuckin' rules... no-one's beating my 225 across the board Behemoth(sp?)!!!

Hmm, my friend who made the good decision says he played on, and when I made the bad decision, after the credits it went back to the load screen! WTF?
