I do have facebook, and while it's a damn shame, it's also pretty much THE way to network at my college. The Orwellian "news" feed that tells you absolutely everything that's happening with your friends creeps the shit out of me.

If nobody else had a facebook page, I wouldn't have one either. But its turned into a necesary evil in my life.

Sounds like people should actually read to terms of service that they agree to then...you know, instead of later bitching about how they are being used... :pat: oh yeah, and of course I dont have one.

The information posted on facebook is really of no use to the CIA.

How is a 14 year olds favourite bands and movies going to help the CIA establish if he is a terrorist threat?

It is a waste of money and resourses if it is really going on...

No one should be putting 100% corect data on these sites anyhow...

I remember reading about the Muslim Live Aid thing going on in England recently. There was some guy with a song which recited the 40-odd names of Allah. That would probably call some attention. Or as Psychnaut noted on BS, as would a username like "Achmed_terrorist123". Just note the fine line between cautious and paranoid.

Can't find the magazine now, but in last months issue of PC Plus (UK), there was an article on Facebook. Apparently, much of the funding for facebook came from venture capitalists linked directly or indirectly to the CIA and DARPA. Also, can't remember specifically now, but parts of facebook were originally a DARPA project for archiving information about people but the courts shut it down for being unconstitutional. Google it, I can't be bothered to post links.

I f you care about your privacy you wouldn't use a social networking site ,not even hotmail ,not aim ,not even google. But that's practically impossible. This and Google are just t 2 examples. The chances of my space ,freindster or any other social networking site being absolutely safe are pretty low. That leaves you with only 2 choices:
1) Get of the internet.
2) Every time your gonna do something/type something keep in mind it's being recorded by someone or the other.
It aint really no big deal or anything.

You can still have a social network, hotmail AIM etc if you care about your privacy.
What good is your information to them if you put your name as "John Doe" and your email is registered to one "Fred Jones"

How do you mean, if you care about your privacy don't use social networking? Because of the very nature of the beast, I don't put anything on my social networking site that I don't want people to know. Can you think why? Because that's what they're for. There's no personal information at all in my hotmail account. Do you mean they only way to keep your e-mail private is not to use hotmail? I think you misunderstand the concept of e-mail.

I understand the concept of email.
If people get an email from me they generally know who it is.
And I was using hotmail as an example.

An example of what?

Aboput the fact even if you care about your privacy, you can still lead a relatively normal online life.
I have a hotmail. And believe me I care about my privacy.
But what good is non-existent names, places...
