any good ideas on homemade body armor? Ie bullets, knifes, bats, hands, etc.
I only thought of one and that is taping a phone book to your abs.

1/16th or 1/8th inch plate steel bent to your torso shape.

The other day I saw a method of making a mesh that can be applied to everyday clothes, the mesh makes tazers, stun guns, and any sort of electrical weapon useless. This appeals to me greatly since last year when I was tazered along with many of my fellow students after rushing the football field last year. The idea of being tazered has killed the students will to rush the field, if I can make a material that will render their weapons useless those damn uprights wil fall... the problem is the maker will lonly sell it to LEO's and the military. I have been trying to replicate this material and I have came up with a few ideas, and so far after testing all it does is reduce the effect of the tazer.... Once I get it right I will post up the finished plans

alright. What about somesort of bullet proof body armor or even knife armor? the steel plates would they really work?

have you ever stabbed steel? it will work for bullets, depending on thickness of steel and caliber of the bullet used. ive seen a .243WSSM bullet go through 1/4inch plate steel with no problem, but my 12 gauge slugs wont. make sure you know what your getting shot by first.

You guys are stupid. Do you know what a flak jacket is? its one of the most expensive pieces of gear I am issued and one of the heaviest. Completely assembled, with all peripherals such as the yoke and collar, the groin piece, front, back and side Small Arms Protective Insert plates and all the regular ballistic inserts, its an enormous ungainly paperweight. The fucking thing offers only moderate protection against small calibers at medium to long ranges. The invention of firearms turned armor into a dead technology. If you don't want to get shot, duck or something. Or don't play with guns. Whatever.

a flak jacket, or are you talking about a kevlar vest? ive tried a 1A kevlar vest on and while it's not light, it's something i could get used to given enough time. granted 1 a is nothing compared to a 3 a with trauma plates... they do limit mobility though. if you are talking about a flak jacket such as the ones worn by airmen in wwII then yeah... id imagine those things are heavy as fuck

and whatever happened to the proposed carbon nanotube vest and the spider silk vest?.

btw, while a phone book may make a punch hurt less, a sharp knife will go through one, and even a .22 short will go through a phone book. i think some police in london wear vests that are ballistin nylon with chainmaille inside to stop knives since knives are a bigger threat than guns there.

All on duty uniformed police in the UK are required to wear stab vests. In Ireland it's optional.

Fuck are you talkinbg about THErAPIST? A "kevlar vest" and a flak are the same shit. And as the chart in the wiki article points out, they are only moderately effective.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interceptor_body_armor

This is the crap we get. And it's not that bad of a vest in comparison to some of the other shit out there.

This stuff might be pretty cool though.

uhh, why not just buy body armor ? Ive picked up IIA vests for 60$ at gunshows, and trauma plates for 20$.

As for a hand to hand type situation check out US Cav, while pricey they do offer riot gear that should work ok for most uses.

I'm telling you, take it from someone who has a fuckin Coyote OTV: those fucking things are more trouble than they are worth, and as a civilian you have absolutely no reason to have one. They are bulky, hard to move in, uncomfortable, and impair movement and endurance. Plus, for all the costs, they aren't very effective.

Aww man, I wanted to be the one to post that!

Seriously though, if I had a bunch of cash to spare I'd buy a set of Dragon Skin just for the fuck of it, on the off chance theres a zombie outbreak or riot or whatever the fuck. It was only brought to my attention day before yesterday, and the field test results conducted by every agency except for the US military (which is strangely attached to its contract with Interceptor armor, hmm....) just completely blow my mind.

by flak jacket im talking about a yellow jacket worn by the crewmen of b17's and the like in wwII. it was a largejacket made of ballistic nylon that was covered in small pockets that had steel plates in them. the intention was to protect the airmen from flak, as in the flak shells that went off around the planes and sent flak shrapnel through the skins of the planes and killed the airmen. atleast that's what i was talking about. I was pretty sure I had the name correct but i may be wrong.

anyone else ever see the thing on tv abotu the guy that came up with the bear suit? he was hell bent on making a full armor suit incase of bear attacks. he couldn't be stabbed or crushed and i think they even shot the suit to se if it was sturdy. ran into him with trucks nd shit.

now that's someone who takes body armor way too seriously heh

Dude. If you wan't knife protection, just go with the OG of armor. Chainmail. Expensive at renfest, but with some patience they are really easy to make. Oh, and cheap. Made a good chunk of change selling handmade dicebags to D&D nerds doin that shit.

Well it might have something to do with the 199_ (something shooting/bank robbery in North
Hollywood California.Where the so called "baddies" were on muscle relaxants and had body armor and full-auto 7.62 weapons.

A great protection from knives is heavy and baggy clothes. ud be surprised at what a difference it makes when compared to ..well no protection ^.^

I would advise people against thinking that heavy clothes will protect them from knives.

Im going to second headcase on this one.
The truth is that to have any good protection against knives, you'll have to go for a stab vest. Even then you are far from invincible from knives. If someone wants to kill you with a knife, and knows you are wearing one of these vests they'll get you some other way. A stab wound to the armpit ends in a fatality most of the time, and the thing about that is, it's normally not intentional.

Stone

A stab wound anywhere could be fatal depending on blood loss. The only way I can think of for complete protection is to cover your whole body in chain mail or such, and that's not being realistic.
