What movies have you seen recently?
I've seen Dreamgirls, Epic Movie and Night at the Museum recently. It's late, I can't think of any more recent ones i've seen right off the top of my head.

I've all the big movies in December, except The Queen, Dreamgirls and Pan's Labyrinth. Anything you name, at least a movie that's mainstream, I've probably seen it. Night at the Museum was okay, haven't seen Epic Movie, but the worst movie I've seen in a LONG time was Suckin' Asses... Wait, it's called Smokin' Aces. Lot of good movies this year.
My favorites were The Departed, Blood Diamond, and Children of Men.

I wasn't overly fussed on Children of Men.... like, I knew it was a good film while I was watching it, but it didnt exactly "push my buttons."
The Departed was an awesome show, although at times I found it a little hard to follow. It was better second time around.

Visually, Children of Men was the best film I've seen this year. Framing, lighting, sets/locations, clothing, how the colors meshed. Sorry, I'm a film geek (wannabe filmmaker). The thing about Children of Men was taking the metaphors and subtle messages and applying it to the world stage, and it could be applied to almost any big country, like Russia, UK and USA. It was also very Orwellian, which I think made me appreciate the film more when I discovered that.
Children of Men and V for Vendetta are quite similar.

Epic Movie was funny. Of course it's no "Titanic" or even a "Pirates of the Caribbean" but every movie doesn't have to be.
And i was planning on seeing "Smokin' Aces" :ouch: . I saw the commerical for it and I thought it looked hot. What exactly was so bad about it?

A Knights Tale is fucking shit! A good Heath Ledger movie I've seen recently (again) though is Ned Kelly.
Children of Men was a great film, a spectacle of movie making at it's best.
Best film I've seen recently though has to be Blood Diamond. Want the see Babel but it was a crappy d/l so have to get it again.

Children of Men was pretty good, I really liked Michael Caine's character, however I thought the movie tried a little too hard to get it's political message across. Also, I thought the ending was pretty weak. Overall though, it was a great movie.
Letters from Iwo Jima was also excellent, better than Flags of our Fathers, and is probably the best war movie I've ever seen. (any war).
Apocalypto was another very good movie, however historically innacurate, but hey, I don't go see Mel Gibson's movies to be educated, I go for entertainment, and that it is indeed.

I saw an old Peter Jackson film, Braindead on the T.V a couple of days ago. It's a spoof zombie film and you wouldn't expect it to be made by the same guy as Lord Of The Rings or the new King Kong. Still loads of special effects though, except its the 80's and it's all gallons (literally) of fake blood and the same sort of stopframe animation as in Jason and the Argnoaughts. It was incredibally funny.

r u fckn srs. it's such a great movie. hilarious, a quality piece of film, good acting, good directing (it's by the dude who did payback, another fucking awesome movie ft. mel gibson), a fairly decent story, etc.

^^ Dude, A Knight's Tale is a fucking horrible movie. I don't know what "good acting" you're referring to in it, as as for the story being fairly decent... no, it's not, it's just stupidly ridiculous.
As for Dogma, that movie is hilarious. Though certainly not the best movie I've ever seen, it is certainly a quality film, much moreso than A Knight's Tale, at least, plus its just fun to watch.

Little Miss Sunshine. The previews looked horrid, but I gave it a shot and was absolutely amazed.
Everyone in Hollywood should be strapped down Clockwork Orange style, and forced to watch this movie at least twice a year. A very refreshing change of pace from typical cliches.

k dude, a knight's tale is fifty billion times the movie dogma could ever hope to be. brian helgeland is more of a directer than kevin smith could ever hope to be.
a knight's tale is well directed, and the acting by everyone in the movie is better than anyone in dog fucking ma.
remember that opening bit with the crowd stomping we will rock you? that was fucking awesome.
and what about that church scene with heath ledger and his woman? that scene was fucking awesome. i'd love to see kevin asshole do anything like that.
and what about integrating geoffrey chaucer as the herald? that was fucking brilliant. kevin smith could NEVER do anything like that.
a knight's tale is a tight, well written, well directed and well acted movie. sure, it comes across as a corny, campy, not very good comedy, but if you have any appreciation for movies and directing, you realize that it's really fucking good.
dogma, on the other hand, is NOT well acted, NOT well written and TERRIBLY directed.
god damn, the flaws in that movie are endless. loki, an angel? loki is a norse god, the embodiment of evil and mischief. and it's not even like they could've taken the name - loki is a scandernavian fucking name, as far from christian as you can get.
serendipity is not a muse, and neither is azrael. azrael is not a greek fucking name.
also, what the fuck was the point of the muses? muses are greek, not christian. and it's not like their special muse-powers played any sort of role - but, that one time in the bar, when salma hayek was trying to signal to silent bob to pick up the golf club, anyone else would've realized that a muse could've inspired him to do so without having to resort to physical fucking signals, jesus christ.
the only good thing kevin smith has ever done is put a new pornographers song in jay and silent bob. and use chris rock.
he is NOT a good maker of movies.
also, dogma isn't even fucking funny. the movie barely even has any goddamn jokes. it's like a new simpsons episode.
also, watched trainspotting recently. man, that movie is short.

Ok. So out of complete boredom and because I am currently without much capital, I stayed home tonight and watched a couple movies on ppv. The evening started with Employ of the month. Retarted. But since I knew that going in, I was able to watch it without wanting to poke my eyeballs out with a fork. It was even funny in spots. Next, to counter act all that merryment, Saw III. Gore for gores sake. I felt the pain and suffering level was above par. Over all, it was a great night.

I don't go to a whole lot of movies, but I've watched a few good ones recently.
Empire Records - A personal favorite.
Hard Rock Zombies - Best zombie movie in existence. The sex scene with Hitler, Eva Braun, a werewolf, and amidget alone makes it worth while. I've never seen anything so unintentionally funny, and poorly made. Thank god for the 80's.
Mutants, Monsters, and Marvels - Go Kevin Smith! He did a few interviews with Stan Lee, turned out fantastic. Im a comic book nrrrrd, and I just loved getting into the minds and lives of some of the silver age greats. The whole reasoning behind "Peter Parker" and all those other names and alliterations were just Stan being lazy and forgetful.
Jesus Camp - Bible thumpers galore! Definitely should have won best documentary at the Oscars last night. Soooo well done. "Why shouldnt we believe in global warming?" "Theres no real proof, so what if the temperature has gone up a few degrees, thats nothing" It was just plain shocking.
An Inconvenient Truth - I guess I can't say I mind that it won instead. Definitely a well done movie, getting the word out on our environmentally un-friendly world.
Pauly Shore is Dead - I wish, then I wouldn't have had to sit through this.
Meh. Theres some highlights anyways.

300 is supposed to be amazing. Frank Miller says its everything his comic was and more. Not a single frame of the movie would look really out of place in the movie, art-wise. And Frank Miller being the genius he is, and the comic being as good as it is, I cant wait. Theres so much senseless violence in the movie, but none of it seems senseless. 2000 people may die at once, but you are never disgusted by whats happening. It justs seems like it SHOUDL be happening.

6th March 2007, 09:08 PM
300 the movie is based on frank miller's comic,
which is based on the 300 spartans,
which is based on a myth,
based on true events!
i saw black snake moan on friday, when it came out. i'm not going to go into details of how skullfuckingly amazing it was, and how sam jackson playing an old blues guitarist and christina ricci as a nympho is actually all i could ever want in a movie, ever, because it'd take too long.
i watched the proposition last night. fairly gorry and depressing 'cowboy' movie in australlia. it's pretty fuckign cool - the music was awesome - but i kind of felt that it should've delved more into the shit they did.
also watched waking life, richard linklater's first rotoscoped movie. it was good, and fairly trippy, and it has some good ideas, but it's not even really a movie. it's like a fucking philosophy essay.
the animation is not nearly as quality as a scanner darkly, but i kind of think it benefits from that. it wouldn't've been the same if it was the same quality!
a point of concern, though, is that ASD was rotoscoped in the first place: it totally fit waking life, and KIND of fit ASD, but not really! it's worrisome to think that it's just going to become his signature, something he uses on all of his movies, and not only on the APPLICABLE movies, if ya know what i mean.
i look forward to watching half nelson tonight!
Esophagus
6th March 2007, 09:20 PM

I just loved the cinematography and all the brilliant work the blue screen did. I really just went because Frank Miller is a genius, and its always nice to see a non-superhero comic book movie. Doing Frank Miller justice is an understatement, they went literally shot for shot from the comic novel. The director basically gave the actors the freedom of getting to a certain position, and away from it. But they had to hit that mark. I wasnt a fan of the extra subplots though. It was really all in the art. Thats all there should be to it, art and heroism.

I had read a review on it that said it was awful but here's the thing with movie reviewers...they're all a bunch of old upper middle class guys and they probably aren't the target audience for the movie any damn way so why give a damn about what they say? I find it better to trust reviews from peers who've seen it or just use your commonsense. Just saw Grindhouse last night. The first movie, Planet Terror, Is fucking amazing. Robert Rodriguez at his absolute finest. The second, Deathproof, sucked balls. The commercials make it look like itll be nonstop killing throughout (like planet terror) but at least 75% of it was just a bunch of really, really, really annoying bitchy women sitting around talking. I was disappointed by tarantino. Despite this, though, Planet Terror is easily worth the price of the movie ticket, and the fake movie trailers they have are absolutely awesome. Especially Machete, which is (fakely) about a mexican hitman, who's brother is a priest that helps him kill people, and the best part is that the priest is Cheech Marin. Primarily the work that went into making the Sandman. I hated the amount it broke continuity. The director did an interview saying "after we made Peter's webs natural, we recieved so much junk about how fans couldn't believe it, we decided to steer away from that in this movie." or something to that effect. Yet they made Gwen Stacey come after MJ, and the Sandman the man who killed Peter's dad.

Shrek 3 was funny, nothing great though, but even a lot of the cast have stated that now it's simply a stupid business decision to quit, and that people will go no matter what.

The director did an interview saying "after we made Peter's webs natural, we recieved so much junk about how fans couldn't believe it, we decided to steer away from that in this movie." or something to that effect. Yet they made Gwen Stacey come after MJ, and the Sandman the man who killed Peter's dad.
28 Weeks I haven't seen, but it looks terrible.
Shrek 3 was funny, nothing great though, but even a lot of the cast have stated that now it's simply a stupid business decision to quit, and that people will go no matter what.
Didn't go to Pirates. Not a fan of the series. I don't see it getting to be like Star Wars. Possibly in the amount of movies that come out, but not in its cult following.
Knocked up looks amazing.
No, Pirates is nothing compared to Star Wars. The only comparison I made was the whole "2 is better than 3, but 1 is the best --- No, 3 is better than 2, but, yeah, 1 is the best"
28 Weeks Later was fun. It's a different kind of movie compared to its predecessor.

"diary of the dead" i think. its another one of his zombie movies that isnt really about zombies, more like how journalists are too busy playing their stupid little journalism game to help out in any of the fucked up situations they cover. how gaining knowledge and forming an opinion about something is no real substitute for action. "faith without works is dead" and all of that.
anyway, i was feeling emotionally unhinged about some stuff that has been going on in my life. the movie was really creeping me the fuck out. i dont know if it was the film per se or the other stuff though. but yeah, many brains were eaten.
it was mostly shot on handheld cameras but the hands in question were pretty steady. i didnt feel all pukey like i did during cloverfield.
i'd rate it high end matinee, if i paid full price, i wouldnt hate myself too much.
if you remember "land of the dead" was a thinly veiled attack on the bush administration probably from a marxist perspective. when the gas station zombie figured out how to use a meat cleaver to hack through a wall, it was all i could do not to yell out, "oh look! its the rising class consciousness of the lumpenproletariat!" but i'm just goofy like that.

Not too bad? I came into this flick expecting a sappy Hollywood atrocity masquerading as an indie that rode in on the coat tails of Napoleon Dynamite (which is incidentally also produced by Fox) and other sedated nerd comedies that seem to be becoming all the more popular as the film industry mines the shit out of a lucrative demographic (in fact the only reason I bothered watching it was because I was getting it for someone else, so figured I'd take a look, and now piss away thirty minutes bitching about it). My expectations were far, far too high. (Hard Candy started sucking pretty bad too immediately after we find out that the makeshift castration wasn't fucking real).
Let's put aside the all-too-apparent bullshit "pro-life" overtones, or the fact that for some magical reason more critics aren't drawing the obvious parallels to Mandy Moore's movies, namely Saved! and How to Deal, which are both essentially the same films as this one, or even all of the product placement, and let's start with something that was apparent the second the film started: the atrocious soundtrack. The inane bleating was enough to make me flip on the local community college radio (which was incidentally, and quite fucking luckily, broadcasting the Subgenius Hour of Slack at the same time I was watching the film) every time a new song started in the movie; in other words, I hardly ever switched the radio off. If it wasn't for this lucky diversion, I very likely would have turned the movie off within the first twenty minutes, after the croaking toad who wrote the bulk of the soundtrack busts out into her second solo. In a strange sense, I suppose the music was fitting, in that the film's soundtrack could be successfully marketed as 'whale birthing sounds.'
And this brings us to the dialogue. When the acoustic torture that makes up the soundtrack ends, we're subjected to the equally nauseating script. Heavily peppered with lines like "he's the cheese to my macaroni" and "honest to blog" (there are many more, but by those points I was turning my radio up again, so luckily I don't recall them), you'll involuntarily sneeze in disgust many a-time. Meanwhile, Page and her chirpy brain-dead-yet-snarky friend continue carrying on about nothing in particular (scenes included talking on a HAMBURGER PHONE, and making a BIG DEAL ABOUT TALKING ON A HAMBURGER PHONE--since this is the type of film this is, it wants you to be aware that it is being EDGY and HIP, yet DARK, repeatedly--and attempting, yet even here failing, to treat child birth GLIBLY, thus constituting an EDGY and HIP, yet DARK, COMEDY. In a sense then, what another reviewer (http://efilmcritic.com/review.php?movie=16500&reviewer=392) said about Diablo Cody can well be said about the film itself: " [it] seems like the kind of hipster who not only uses a vintage lunch box for a purse, but, more importantly, insists you know she uses a vintage lunch box as a purse."
In fact the only time I didn't cringe when someone opened their maw to spew whatever dreck they were force fed an hour prior, was when it was Bateman talking, which accounted for maybe ten total minutes of the film, and even that was ruined by the nonsensical romance subplot between him and Page that was magically managed to be diffused in a single scene (incidentally, what the fuck is the point of having Bateman and Cera in the same film if they're never actually in the same scene?).
The comments brain-dead groupies let spew about this film are also entirely in-sync with the film's own mediocrity. Take one commentator who said something along the lines of "any film that references HG Lewis and Argento is gonna be great." This attempt to find some saving grace in this pile of bloodied tampons mixed in with diaper gravy and month-old man-spunk seems to marvelously miss the little fact that Juno mentioning Argento or Lewis is akin to Dave Foreman or Ed Abbey being discussed by the characters in Disney's Cars. Like the rest of the cultural references, they are merely plastered on like Hot Topic patches, entirely out of place.
I'd tell Cody to get the fuck back to stripping, but I wouldn't particularly like to be subjected to her gyrating ass anymore than her celluloid brain. Ultimately I'm reminded (as I so often am) of a Bukowski quote: "God, they all had assholes and sexual organs and their mouths and their armpits. They shit and they chattered and they were dull as horse dung. The girls looked good from a distance, the sun shining through their dresses, their hair. But get up close and listen to their minds running out of their mouths, you felt like digging in under a hill and hiding out with a tommy-gun." (See that? I quote Bukowski, and that makes me EDGY and HIP and DARK).
Now don't get me wrong, Ellen Page is generally great, in fact I'd go so far as to say that she's one of the most shining young actresses we have today (along with Jena Malone and Zooey Deschanel), and she does remind me of the softcore model Ariel Rebel (compare this (http://images.eonline.com/eol_images/Profiles/20060929/244.page.ellen.092706.jpg) to this (http://www.petiteteenagergalleries.com/galleries/Ariel_Rebel/Ariel_Rebel.jpg)), but she sleepwalked through this role. Parroting painfully scripted hipster dialogues and slumming around all preggers-like, pausing for the occasional sob and laugh, doesn't good acting make. If you want to see a far more interesting and innovative recent flick that she's in, check out Tracy Fragments (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0801526/).
In short, I'd give this filmic abortion (oh yes, pun very much intended) 0/10, on par with Glitter and whatever the fuck that new Paris Hilton movie is called.

On the other hand, I did see a fun little slasher romp the other day: The Cook (http://www.thecookthemovie.com/), "serving up succulent sorority babes one limb at a time" It definitely reminded me of Herschell Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast (and the more recent Blood Feast 2), or anything by Russ Meyer. Definitely worth a gander. Cheesy music, coupled with cheesy acting, maniacal laughter-cum-slaughter, all combine to make this a delicious ode to the self-aware, self-parodying slasher genre. Oh, and if you care about 'the plot', a bunch of girls who belong to the Lamba Epsilon Zetta sorority (yes, that spells LEZ, and yes, there's lezzing out a'plenty), get a new Hungarian cook who starts cooking up the girls and serving them up to each other (some of the manic dinner scenes particularly remind me of similar scenes in Joe D'Amato's Emanuelle's Revenge).

"the cook" sounds interesting. i probably wont find a copy anytime soon, though. russ meyer... the only thing of his i've seen is "beyond the valley of the dolls". i was struck by all the parallels between that film and rocky horror.... anyone else noticed that too?

There was also relatively good acting.

Yesterday I embarked upon the process of watching a movie that was legend in my former circle of Internet friends...
Natural Born Killers... Or N.B.K. to some.
I was browsing through Quick Silver Screen's forums when I came across the N.B.K. thread and with nothing else to do I began to watch it...
The first thing you notice in the film is the sheer scale of the violence and the calm that precedes the violence, and the calm before the storm. In the first scene we are introduced to Mickey [Played by Woody Harrelson, who's father was actually a murderer, ironically...] and Mallory [Juliette Lewis]. Two lovers who embark on a world famous killing spree all across America...
The movie begins in a hick cafe somewhere in the Southern states of the USA. Mickey is eating when Mallory who is dancing to music is approached by a hick, who briefly dances with her and flirts with her as well as making offencive and vulgar innuendos. The calm music turns to 'Shit List' by L7 and Mallory beats the hick whilst singing to the song...
After murdering everyone in the roadside cafe minus one person they embark on a 'Starkweather - Fugate' style spree across America, whilst a money making journalist played by Robert Downey Jr turns them into celebrities with a status similar to that of 'Bonnie and Clyde'.
Finally they are captured by an obsessive cop, one 'Jack Scagnetti' [Plated by the brilliant Tom Sizemore] who uses them to generate a huge amount of money for himself. Scagnetti himself a Psychopath who has a fascination with the criminal mind after seeing his mother being gunned down by Charles Whitman...
Finally on live television after the 'Superbowl' Micky is interviewed by Wayne Gale [Downey Jr.] in prison, whilst Mallory is being beaten by Scagnetti and guards. The fellow prisoners after being inspired by Mickey and Mallory cause a huge riot forcing most of the guards to leave Mickey... Whilst cracking rude jokes to the guards and Gale, Mickey attacks a guard and kills various people before forcing them to follow him on his vengeful quest around the prison...
Reaching Mallory's prison cell he engages Scagnetti in a 'Mexican stand off' [A recurring theme in Tarantino stories...] which does not end until Mallory attacks Scagnetti and brutally kills him...
After that they continue on a rampage of the prison until they escape with Gale and a prison guard who they later murder... In some woods they place Gales camera on the ground before they explain what they are about before shooting Gale numerous times with a shotgun...
An ok movie, on the whole. I expect if it were directed by Tarantino instead of Oliver Stone it would have been better. One element I did like was the changes from colour to black and white, and how it incorporated different elements of filming...
A rating: 6.5/10.

Like I said before, I'm a sucker for foreign films. This week, it's Oldboy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/), a 2003 South Korean effort.
Plot in brief; man gets kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years. After being released, he embarks on a quest for answers and revenge.
I've come to hate any film with special effects (read; American films) because more often than not they're used in lieu of storyline and characters. While I won't say Oldboy thrives on these (due to a mind-fucking but fairly far-fetched ending), it does far better than most. I was really behind the main character Oh-Daesu and was captivated by the storyline, and I did enjoy the conclusion regardless. And who needs special effects when you've got that corridor fight scene? Jesus. Compare that to the be-all-and-end-all effort in tediousness, the fightscene from Matrix with all those Agent Smiths. Oh-Daesu shits in Neo's sheets.

I'd like to make a comment on both 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'American History X'.
Reservoir Dogs was Tarantino's first major film that he had directed. And is completely unlike anything he has done to this date. Pulp Fiction is the only Tarantino film that can be compared to Sin City, as both follow a fairly similar plot structure and both star the God; Bruce Willis.
American History X is a groundbreaking film. It is by far the most gritty portrayal of racism on screen. The ending where Danny is murdered is such a fantastic twist and represents how the entire change around in his Racist views will again return to what they previously were.

Very entertaining, and much better than its predecessor. This film relied on a story, not its CGI.
Wanted: C-
This movie was corny and predictable. Angelina was smoking hot though. I found the main character annoying for much of the movie, and I was surprised Morgan Freeman would be in such a film. I'm more surprised it's getting good reviews when it's so stupid!
The Happening: C+
No surprise twist endings here. The direction was bad, but I liked some of the minor characters a lot (the greenhouse guy, for one). It was sort of spooky too. Mark Wahlberg gave us his whiny Boogie Nights voice, which is fucking great! Dumb story overall.

1.) Exactly right on Reservoir Dogs. Not a bad movie in it's own respect but not quite on the level of his later movies. IMO
2.) In regards to American History X, I would agree in it being a great movie but I always have a hard time deciding where I stand after finishing it. In a way I start getting more pissed off race wise but then again, the only people I really hate are the ignorant. The gang mentality on both sides is what gets to me the most.

Made of Honor: B-
I enjoyed this film in it's predictability. Maybe I'm getting easier with the grades because so many films these days are shit, but with this one I knew I'd get the cheesy moments and happy ending. I put it in the "B" range mainly because I could relate to the main character - a) not realizing what you have until you're at risk of losing it and b) sitting around too long and following routine. Oh, and of course, sleeping with lots of hot chicks...:wiggle:
Kung Fu Panda: A
A solid, cute film that made me laugh out loud from beginning to end. A very light film with cute CGI animals and great quotes. I think Dreamworks is getting better with its technology. I definitely recommend this film for those who need a pick-me-up or enjoy wholesome entertainment. A little too violent for little kids though.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons was long, slow and boring, not to forget disconnecting. If he grew forward, we'd just have a boring version of Forrest Gump.
Both movies are nominated for Best Picture Oscars. As far as I can tell, both movies are of personal narratives about life lessons. I'll check out The Reader next and see if that's the theme this year.
