ive been to bird dog trials and they always have numerous boxes of 12 gauge blanks. they sound pretty close to the real thing, and they arent very hard to make. just open the end and pour out all the pellets, then reseal the shell.

From what I read I think he means because they're at trials, for gun dogs, they won't need real pellets as it'll be the sound they need, so they do what he said. Other than that, fuck do I know, thats just my guess. Why don't you just buy a blank firer?

Blank's for shotguns are called caps. There deliberately manufactured so that you cannot make them work lethally.

I have done what torch said but we were using a dart as the firing pin and it got embedded into a tree.

Basically to help kids be safe around shotguns.
There specially manafactured replica shotguns which fire them and I believe i am right in saying normal shotguns can use them.
Like Torcher said you see them alot at gun dog events, and there alot of them in my area.
When I have time, I'll find the advert for the afore mentioned item from an issue of sporting Gun I have lying around...

As I said, it is a little late but whilst doing some casual reading I found the advert...
I'll OCR it later today
Well, I scanned it in...

Thats the finished result.
The shotgun is to help kids be safe around real shotguns and to get to grips with the sound. I am not trying to advertise because I have heard from various sources that the above company is defunct...

yes and no. the primer will go off as normal but the powder will not be confined and probably wont burn completely. hence, different sound. i dont know how different though.
adding pellets in front of a blank shotgun round will probably result in a KB. (those are bad) the primer will probably not be too different, but the powder will probably be much faster to ensure complete combustion even though its only pushing a wad.
KB = Kaboom! = destroyed gun + major owies.
