Ive tried repeatedly to upload one. Its either too big, or too big a file size. I cant seem to get it right. Kind of a piss-off.

Ok, now all members with over 25 posts can upload avatars with dimensions of 120x120 and <=25KB in size.

Happy?

y thank you kind gentle men.

hahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha

Seriously, thanks though I never had a problem with avatar size. Alot of boards make you have really small avatars no matter how many posts you have. I like my avatar though I am going to change it and soon. :veryhappy

Im not having a problem with avatar size, just file size. I didnt think it was really a big file... I'm a bit of a n00b to this, but 25000 bytes is 25kbs right?

25000B = 25KB, <As in 1000 bytes in a kilobyte
25600B = 25KiB. <As in 1024 bytes in a kilobyte

How big is your avatar in file size?

25k is 5 seconds downloading for a person on dial up. If alot of members have avatars bigger than 25k it's not really fair on dial up users. Rorta is all about freedom and discussion. The only people who are meaningfully excluded are spammers and trolls. It's not fair that a person should have to suffer long loading times because their geographic location means that they can't get broadband. The new design will even have hi-bw and low-bw versions (your choice is then storeed in a cookie so you don't have to select every time) to facilitate as many users as possible.

Can you compress it as a JPEG using Photoshop? 2k isn't really going to make much of a difference to quality.

I have messed with the quality level on CS2. Still a bit above. Ill compress it... Or just find a new av. It really isnt a big problem. Thanks for the input though.

You might know it already, but press CTRL-ALT-Shift-S and it'll open a window where you can have multiple views and then see it as a GIF, PNG or JPEG (with various levels of compression).

Ugh. I am sooooooo dumb. I guess I didn't think all too much about formats. Most of the forums I've posted on only allow a .jpeg or .bmp. I didn't even think of GIF. You lose a small amount of quality, but a uch smaller file. Oops.

Gif's are good for flat images with a few colours. In fact, you can have up to 256 colours in a GIF without losing ANY quality but significantly reducing filesize. I find png's better though. Same quality but usually a smaller filesize.

I stuck to .gifs to avoid being denied. Now that I know .pngs are accepted, I'll probably use it if I ever find anything a little more complex.
