I shot for expert qualification for the second time with the M16A2 today. That means I get to wear an even cooler badge than before. Maybe I can convince my unit to send me to be a range coach. Then I'll get to pistol qual, and shotgun, and a bunch of other shit, and hells yeah!! Shooting in fun as hell. Nothing feels better then the satisfaction of building that good position, letting out your breath and giving that slow steady trigger pull at you natural respiratory pause while the black on that target is center in you correct sight alignment, and then seeing that target come up with a big white shot spotter dead center in the black on the B Modified target at 500 yards.
Now this isn't exactly competitive shooting per se, even though we give each other shit for it, and it actually can determine whether or not my career advances or not(your rifle score, physical fitness score, and Marine Corps Institute courses completed are your biggest source of point toward promotion), but I want to talk about competitive or other wise formally score shooting. Who shoots in matches? Whats the best you ever shot and what did you shoot with. Tell us something about the scoring system and how it works in the event.
For rifle qual in the USMC you have a 250 point scale with 3 targets, the Able circular target, the Dog target which resemble a prone shooter, and the B modified which is generally man shaped. All the targets have rings with decreasing point values as you might imagine. Hitting the black area in the middle is five points on each target. Hitting anywhere on the paper is a two. You fire 5 shots from the sitting, kneeling and then standing at the 2 hundred yard line on the Able in the slow fire, where each shot is individually scored. Then you fir the 200 yard rapid fire in the sitting for 10 rounds on the Dog target. Then the 300 five in the sitting slow, 10 in the prone rapid, then at 500 yards 10 slow on the b mod. I scored 228 out of 250, 220 is the minimun to qual Expert, last time I got 222. I thing my standing could have been better if I hadn't rushed the shots. I had plenty of time. When I was done there was still like 5 minutes of fire time left.
Any one else shoot for score?
