Nitric Acid
Nitric acid is an important ingredient in many explosives, nitroglycerin, nitrocellulose, nitrostarch, etc. To make nitric acid you will need sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and potassium nitrate (KNO3). You measure out amounts of the two chemicals to prepare for the specific nitration you plan on doing. For synthing nitric acid I would reccomend purchasing a distillation setup like this one, http://www.pelletlab.com/ebay/distillation_2.jpg but if you can't afford it you can also follow this instruction to make nitric acid, http://www.geocities.com/brainfevert/hno3.html. The thing to watch for in nitration is red nitric fumes, these are toxic. I have never nitrated myself but I have been researching it for awhile now so that I can do it when my parents will let me.

In many cases you can use a nitrate salt like KNO3 or AN and excess sulfuric acid in place of the nitric acid. HNO3 is a royal pain in the ass to produce at times and it can also be expensive as hell to produce/ buy.
You would get a reduced yield with the xNO3 + sulfuric route, but it's easier for some people. Brainfevert also has the synthesis for Nitroglycerin and Nitrocellulose using a nitrate salt and excess sulfuric acid on his site. |

Nitric doesn't seem too hard to do...But I guess I will find out when I try it..Which I am really looking forward to doing.

It isn't exactly hard to do per say, but it can at times be a pain in the ass. and it's expensive to make when you have to go and get expensive labware. If you can improvise the labware or if you can do without the nitric in some applications then that's probably the better way to go for most people.
I've made nitric with improvised labware before. It wasn't too hard to improvise the stuff and make the nitric, but I'd much rather use a nitrate and sulfuric instead of going through the hastle of making nitric sometimes. other times making and using the nitric pays off. just a matter of opinion I guess |

Getting the labware isnt a problem, I figure I have to get it eventually anyways so I might as well now. Plus I've got a kick ass job.

I finally got sulfuric acid, made nitric yesterday using your method, it worked and I made some NC...Next will be nitro starch.

Now maybe it's just me, but maybe its NOT everywhere where they are? I have access to 50 lb bags of it but i also work on a golf course who has a license and can order an ungodly amount of chemicals. I'm also in the us. Outside of a golf course in the US it's still a pain in the ass to find unless it's bought by the lb as a stump remover or unless you find one of the 1% of drug stores that still sells it as "salt peter". it's also expensive both ways.
Since he's in another country though maybe it isn't everywhere fuckstick. |
